since I've never been able to get an answer by anyone, I might as well ask the experts here.
Why is it that snowmobiles have a thumb throttle lever versus a twist throttle (as a motorcycle) or a finger operated throttle (as a PWC). I don't know about the rest of you here, but I find that the thumb throttle is bit uncomfortable after a while.
Comments???????????

I'll take a stab at this one.
I think if you had a twist grip throttle the on and off jerking of the throttle on a bumpy trail would wreak havoc with the clutches, shifting up and backshifting constantly as the engine RPM fluctuated.
With a bike you have manual clutch and transmission so it's not as bad for shifting. With a PWC there is no transmission just direct drive.
Am I on the right track here guys?

Twist-grip throttles are tough to get certified for sleds because they are more prone to freezing up. Only Boivin has been able to use one to my knowledge. Plus, where would the thumb warmer go?

Do you have a thumb warmer for your left hand? So if you didn't need to use your thumb you wouldn't need a thumb warmer for you right hand either silly.
There is no issue with a twist throttle moving when riding bumps and you can hold on much better when you can use your thumb on the grip and not on the throttle. A twist throttle is actually better for bumps.
I think the real reason is ease of use and freezing up. It takes practice for beginners to use a twist throttle. Anyone can use a thumb throttle.

That topic was brought up in this thread as well. Some who have had experiences with twist throttles did not like them.

Stylus: I was joking about the thumb warmer. In truth, if I had a twistgrip throttle, I would just cut my thumbs off because I wouldn't need them anymore.

I don't have my Rs Venture yet but was checking on out in the show room . I found the throttle to be heavyer than my 600 ,I guess because there is one more carb . I am wondering if any thing can be done to lighten the spring preassure . My buddy has a Ski-Doo and it takes nothing to squeeze it . Last winter my thumb would get so numb that I couldn't feel it ,I started putting my palm over the throttle a lot of the time and that helped a lot .

I think not using a twist throttle has to do more with how far the bars on a sled move. On a sled the throttle can be pointed into stomach or point out of the front of the windscreen. This would make throttle control had, on a bike or even the snow hawk the mach is turned more by leaning then turning the handle bars. This is just my two cents.
