You heavy guys complaining about bottoming with the new skid check this out. At the adjustment end of the monoshock are three grooves around the shock body. You will probably find the circlip in the middle one. Moving the clip to the groove towards the spring will increase the initial preload. Now you have seven new harder preload settings to play with. In reality, this shock as 21 possible preload positions. You will have to remove all preload on the spring in order to get the circlip off. If you have a spring compressor it can be done on the sled. If not, you will probably have to remove the shock. Your dealer should also be able to make this adjustment for you.

I was told that all the RX-1s are set with the spring seat in the softest groove (closest to the rear eye of the shock). But you're right; there are 21 spring positions if you count all three spring seat circlip grooves

So the next question is what does it take to move the clip?

I read somewhere that if you have the right spring compressor you can compress the spring in place and move the clip.

Where is the clip? Is it hidden under the adjusting collar or something?

I talked to my dealer today about this and they said they have to remove the skid, remove the shock and damper adjuster and then use their shock spring tool to remove the spring, change the clip position and reverse the order.

Sounds like a fairly big job done this way.

I am going to try and do this on the machine with strut spring compressor friday...I will let you know.

My Yamaha mechanic friend showed me his large modified vise grip pliers he uses to compress the spring with. Circlip gets removed with a small common screwdriver. He talked like he could do it on the sled. I haven't looked at my sled to see which groove the clip was located in from the factory. Doubt I'll have to move mine as I'm only about 190 fully loaded.
