Been seeing a few old stock MPI superchargers on ebay for $2000 and less, brand new in the box. I called up MPI and they told me there would be no warranty on the supercharger itself and something about it being on the shelf for over a year being the key......and to stay away from it. Although after he told me it would probably be fine, then said he would charge $1200 for a new head unit if it is bad. Does this make any sense, is there a shelf life on it? What's the difference if it's on your sled or on the shelf?

This kit retails for over $4000 and MPI says stay away because it's old, and actually told me to go turbo. Any input is appreciated, the kit in question is $1800 and in its original box on ebay now.....check it out

I think I heard that there was a bad batch of them. So that might be around when they were sent out. And now they are turbo people so will push the new product. But I'm sure they switched for a reason also

I think you mis-understood me. We are not in charge of warranty of the Super Charger itself. The reason those are being sold so cheap is because there was 1yr self life and 1yr warranty from date of purchase. Theres no warranty on them because of age (Rotrex's terms). Yamaha is aware, that's why there so cheap. The dealers know and are not informing the customers. I said if you were wanting something with warranty you should try to find a turbo kit. Out of 5,000 turbo kits we have had 3 turbo's come back.

i kind of find it wierd a subsupplier purchase date is when the warranty starts rather than when the customer buys it for actual install.

My opinion to the OP is more than likely its fine and the internal bearings that can go bad are more than likely off the shelf parts that can be bought online. I dont know of all parts that go bad in a supercharger of this type but buyign a new unit for $1200 is probably not needed.

Lastly it seems like turbochargers are an overall better option for mpg, power capabilities, and maintenance. They also add weight to the rear of the sled rather than more to the front.

I bought one of those and it failed! MPI would not warranty it but did offer to sell me one for $1250. Its not worth it! Especially when the unit fails miles into your ride and leaves you stranded! Stay away!

Tim (nytrozula) We did everything we could to try to get Rotrex to warranty yours. We offered you everything to get you back and running for $1250 including a new drive assembly attached to the end of the supercharger; a list value of over $2500. So that's us covering more then Half of the cost to get you back riding. Honestly I don't agree with Rotrex's warranty terms.

After talking to MPI as i said and now seeing nytrozulas response, I'm glad I didn't purchase the kit. I didn't misunderstand MPI, they said there will be no warranty on this old stock new item........i just found it hard to believe, so I asked for opinions here on the board.

you are correct......the dealers are not warning you of this...."no warranty because of age", should they say its a crap shoot and good luck.

Not trying to stir the pot at all, I'm staying away......period

That is mpi answering you and clarifying what you discussed on phone with them right in this post. I think they would be good. I would like one and may for next season. But as said before if I recall there was a batch that was bad but most were fine. If there was a huge issue with all of them bad Yamaha would have had lawyers fix that and you would see an uproar on here.

I almost bought one of those, but after reading the failures, said forget that.

What does it tell you if the manufacturer wont even back their product. Im not bashing MPI, because it looks like they got screwed with the whole rotrex deal too.

That blower should last 100,000 miles, obviously there is a design flaw or a manufacturing screw up.

When I say "its not worth it", I am refering to staying away from the supercharger that will not have a warranty and not the new unit from MPI. I wouldn't recommend anybody buy one of these superchargers that are " on sale" knowing what I went thru after mine blew. I have every intention of replacing it with the new one we spoke about. There are several guys on this forum that had one of these SC's and they also experienced the same thing I did. In my opinion, Rotrex should definitely cover this issue no matter what the date is because it is clearly a design flaw that they released to the production and they know about it now. It had nothing to do with the age or the installation. $2000 is a lot of money to risk.
