MTX as a trail sled??

What do you guys think about buying an MTX for use as a trail sled. Really would use it almost exclusively as a Midwest trail sled. I'd like to have a longer track Nytro, and it's hard to resist the 08 pricing! I know the XTX is the way to go but I'm on a budget. What kind of mods would I need to make?

I have ridden both the 08 MTX and the 09 XTX and if you can stretch the budget I would go for the XTX! First thing I would recommend if you went with the 08 MTX is to get different springs on the front shocks ( the 08 springs are a dual rate spring and make the sled feel reel tippy with factory settings, the 09 springs are a single rate spring which helps it feel more stable and not so tippy!! The shocks for 09 are the same with a mild re-valve). The next thing to consider would be the track, if your going to be trail riding with the MTX it has 2.25in lug track and because of the taller lug getting snow in to cool the hyfax could become an issue! With the 09 XTX your gaining the new front end geometry with the GYTR clicker shocks(which is a huge difference between these two sleds), new tunnel design, hand deflectors, and a new clicker shock in the rear skid along with tunnel protectors ( should you want to stud it! ) Oh and don't forget the 4yr warranty on the 09 XTX!! By the time you add new shocks and or new springs to the front end and add in a more trail friendly track, the difference might not be as big as you thought! Another angle you might want to consider is picking up a 08 E/R, 40th or a RTX and throw a 136in track or a 144in track under it, might be the least expensive way!! My 0.2!!

I have ridden the 2009 XTX and own a 2008 MTX. I agree, do not buy the MTX as a trail sled. The A-Arms are also narrower helpig contribute to the "tippy feeling. Tippy=Good on the mountain and bad on the trail.

I literally just walked in the door from a 90 mile ride. Lots of boondocking and powder play, but also rode probably 30 miles on way bumpy trail. I wished I had my wife's phazer with the GYTR Clicker shocks. After the run down the hill I was begging for mercy.

GET THE XTX, the MTX is NOT a trail sled. You will be very dissappointed in an MTX for mostly trail use. I ride the mountains and love it, but I used to live in NH. If this were a sled in NH, I would HATE IT!!!! That might be kinda harsh, but I really think the XTX is that way to go. The XTX handles extremely well and really does it all as they are claiming. Best of all worlds!!!

I have a MTX and it would not be my choice as a trail sled. I think you would have better results stretching a 121 Nytro to 136 if you really wanted more track.

The MTX front and rear suspension is not trail friendly in my opinion.

Great powder boondocking sled (just as advertised) not a trail sled...............
