MTX on the trails?

I'm not saying anything or cutting on anyone but it is amazing to read this stuff and think that in the mid 90's a 144 was a huge track and people got around with 136's in the mountains.

;)! I could not agree more! I keep tempting myself to drop down to a 136 but the Nytro is a heavy sled no matter how much weight you can drop. Also with everyone running 153+ tracks now you want to be able to hold your own. But everyone always says how impressed they are with how my sled does and they are all running bigger tracks. If I can come up with another drive shaft I will drop down to 136 for the spring riding.

As to the drivers I have never ran anything but the Avids but if you search it most everyone will say they are the best.

X2 on the Avids, they are made to the highest quality

If I were you, I would opt for a MTX. By the time you get an XTX mountain worthy......you have to turn it into an MTX. Even the front end has to be narrowed because the wider stance sucks in the mountains. I ride with an XTX that has been somewhat "mountainized" and I definitely prefer my 09 MTX. Good scratchers do an amazing job on the trails, even with a 2.5" track. X3 on the Avids.

my wife has a XTX and i'm looking to swap the track this year. I wanted to get a good mountain track like a powerclaw or CE for her but i've done some research and I don't think you can put anything bigger than 1.75 track on the XTX without doing some other work. I think the best you do is the camoplast backcountry track without swithing out the drivers and making some clearance changes in the bulkhead. That said i did meet a guy last year riding who put I think a 2" on his wifes and said it fit fine. THe other problem is when you go 2" or more the pitch of the tracks is bigger than the XTX 2.52 driver pitch. anyone actually done a mountain track on an XTX have any reports?
