I finally took the time to do it. I got my sled put back together yesterday with the 162" x 16 x 2.5" Camo Extreme. YIKES, is that thing huge! With the stock tunnel and chain case and 7 tooth 3.0" Wahl brothers drivers the very outer edges (roughly (1/4" to 5/16") of the exteme outer edges of the outside paddles were hitting as they went around at the very top/front of the tunnel. I used a pair of scissors and angled off the outside tips of the affected paddles. I also had enough adjustment with 159" rail extensions to easily accomodate the 162" track.

The track is stiffer than heck right now. I see some very conservative porting in it's future. Just two holes in the inner panel this time around to let the track become more flexible. This time I will also be making sure the inside idler wheel on the rear axle isn't going thought the middle of the holes. I guess it's really no bigee but it could be a potential vibration source?

I went with 20 x 42 gearing to start out. It drops the top end to 90+ mph but with 2 1/2" paddles I'll just be asking for trouble going that fast.

21 x 40 = 99+ mph
21 x 42 or 20 x 40 = 95+ mph
20 x 42 =90+ mph

This is based on 10,700 engine RPM. I wonder if that RPM on the gear chart needs to be gear reduced for the RX-1? I bet it does. Then again maybe the gearing calculator I used factored that into its calculations?

I went back to 15mm rollers again to allow me to throw a little bit more weight on my Heavy Hitters. They were darn near empty to allow me to get to 10,500 to 10,700 with the Shockwave adjustable helix while climbing at higher altitudes and with this honkin track I could almost bet I'll need even more RPM yet.

Now it's time to mount the new Boss flat top seat. The seat looks weird but it's lighter than heck and has a pretty good sized storage compartment and a built in LED tail light.

Last but not least will be the rider forward mod. I still don't like the idea of grinding a hole in the rear of the hood but I guess it's the right thing to do? I really need to ride a sled with it done. Does it ride just like an Apex, because I have ridden them.

Ok, I don't think I had better try to fit any more potential topics into this long post.

Let it snow!

worthless without a picture :tg: ;)!

My track is ordered frosty, i can't wait to try that monster.

:letsnow:

I suppose you are right Tundra. Once I get the seat on and the sled cleaned up a bit I will take a picture.

It's weird, my M7 skid seems to be stuck halfway down. The rear scissor is bent back instead of hanging vertical. I haven't figured that one out yet.

The track seems much more menacing than the 159" for some strange reason?

Let us know when you get your's Tundra.

I guess you track is to tight. M7 skid and K-mod skid are almost the same and i got this problem before.

Yeah, one my sled repair (many roll last season) and track on, i give you an update.

I'm making story in my head about me beating up dragon and m8 in the deep :drink: :drink:

Thanks Tundra. I will loosen up the track a bit and see if the skid drops into the proper place. I also plan to port the track shortly.

Just imagine if the the RX-1 Mountain came stock in 2003 and on with the 162 x 16 x 2 1/2" track? It would have set the world on its ear.

Can't wait to see it. should be real purdy.

Regarding the suspension, I would bet the bottom mount of the rear shock fell to the down possition while installing the skid. The bottom of the skock (where is mounts to the skid) has a small extention from the idler wheels. If you don't watch out gravity takes over and it falls down. I did this and the rear skid would not compress and felt like a 2x6. I believe I was able to loosen the track, have someone lift the rear of the sled and rotate the shock into the correct position.

congrats on the track install

my family has finally left town and i'll be able to get back into the garage. i've got a maaverick 162x16 and 7 tooth drivers on order as well as a few extras for the m7 skid next weekend should be pretty interesting.

pm'd you about the finger track and drivers

Thanks Freewheeler!

Jonny Rocket was correct on my suspension issue. I knew it looked weird but I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong. I went ahead and fixed the problem and all is well. Thanks J.

Lee, when we riding?? I just shoved a 156x15x2.5 extreme in mine too. Can't wait for snow!

Aaron, we need to do that! Maybe Kachess lake if Joel is willing?

I still haven't fired up the 1972 Skidoo yet but it's on my list of things to do.

Frost and others with the 2.5 challenger????

with those types of tight clearances is it going to cause problems? i've heard folks run the 2.5, but i'm probably like most who are a bit leary.

i nearly bought the maverick but now i'm rethinking the challenger extreme on my rx1 project ????

Joe, after our phone call I got a little concerned as well. Go to Snowest and read my post (I go by Powder Blue over there) on track porting on the Mountain forum. There is some very intersting information on the subject by people claiming to be snowmobile engineers.

Best of luck

We would love to host some Yami riders in our neck of the mountains. We don't always have the softest snow, but if there is snow anywhere, we usually have it here (knock on wood).
