Iv got a 03 rx-1 with 10000 miles on it, i just put new rings in this year , no other mods but gutted muffler. Im getting a popping sound out of my exhaust from idel to 6000 rpm. But 6000 to max rpm dosent skip a beat sounds perfect. This popping sound has been around before i did rings and before i gutted the muffler. Iv got my idel screws set at 1 3/4 turns and plugs look great. I also have syncronized the carbs last week any help would be great thanks

Need to put your location in your profile, Site requirement.

Clean your carbs, ecspecially focus on pilots, use a small wire to ream out the all holes and the thru the center, clean the mains and power jet also.
I would also clean your coils with brake clean or contact cleaner.

I cleaned my carburaters three times hopping i missed some dirt and no luck. ill pull them apart and clean the one more time. Could 91 octane be the problem? Also i did the exhaust dounuts at the begining of last year but havent of checked them since, Ill check them on the weekend due to the sled being at my cabin and let you guys know what i find out thanks

I did my donuts last year and this year I got a leak again, pulled it apart and the damn clamp just came loose but the other 3 were tight?!? So hopefully yours is as easy a fix as mine.

To test cover your exhaust pipes with your gloves while its running and see if it dies. If it does your exhaust is sealed and we need to keep looking elswhere.

thanks for the thoughts, ill check it on friday. Have you heard of removing material from the clamps approx 2mm so you can tighten them more?

Yes i ground mine down so I could tighten the clamp all the way,
The donuts seem to last longer also.

Hey guy's wanted to let you guys know what i did and what i found out. First i checked my exhaust donut's and they turned out to be fine, I took the clamps off and ground 2mm of meterial off so they would go alittle tighter didnt fix the popping. Next i took my coils off and cleaned them, holy crap where they dirty now they clip on to the spark plug, bonus, still didnt fix the popping. Took my carbuater apart again cleaned them again, i used a tourch cleaning tool to clean the jets, checked the floats put them back togeather still didnt fix my problem. My next step is i have a spare set of carbs sitting around so im go to try them. It almost seems like my carbs are going out of sink when ever i go for a ride. The engine idles rough after a ride. I put 300 miles on yesterday and the engine never missed a beat above 40 mph, but slow down and the popping starts. Im going to put the other set of carbs on monday and try it out, ill let you guys know thanks again

It sounds like your idle circuits (passages) are plug with crud? If you are willing to go through with disassembling the rack, disassemble the carbs completely, letting fester in a bucket of carb clean, wash off, air hose the passage ways, and reassemble.

As I noted in a prior thread I wouldn't have though that dunking in a bucket of carb clean would have mattered. I pulled my 4-carb rack from my hunting idle 78 CB750 not once but twice: completely disassembled, and sprayed carb cleaner and compressed air. Both times my idle was still flaky. The third time I disassembled and dunked in the bucket-o-carb clean, washed, air compressed, reassembled and.... perfect steady idle.

May work for you too, sounds like the same problem I had.

so finaly no more popping. I desided to try sea foam instead of tearing the carbs apart agian and low and dehold the thing runs like a top. Well im not one for aditives but that sea foam saved my day, instead of working on the sled i was ridding it ya ya ya ya. Thanks for everybodys input. I guess there was still crap in the idle pasages.

Run regular gasoline if its stock naturally aspirated if you check your owners manual its says to run regular.

Good call on trying Sea Foam and resolving your issue with minimal additional work. Hope it stays on the up and up for ya.

I noticed you said you gutted the muffler. That could have been part of the cause of the popping. When you free up the exhaust, you gotta put bigger jets in it.
