09 nytro xtx, 8 inch slydog powederhounds, mbrp silencer, ulmer racing clutching, fast track studs,cr10ek sparkplugs,
My 09 xtx has 9,400 miles on it.went to the u p for a week. The last day after riding 900 miles took sled out of trailer went down the road to off trail riding. Deep snow and temp light came on.never had a issue even with low snow condition. Owned the sled since new and only seen the temperature light if I waited to long at a stop sign for some one to catch up.fan seems to be turning on coolant is full no leaks while under load in the powder is when it happens. Got back to the road and road about four miles back to cabin on plowed dirt roads and light never came on.I know people have had issues with temp light coming on but something has to be wrong with my sled as I never had a issue in 9,400miles and I've rode in all snow conditions.I couldn't even touch the radiator it was hot and could feel the heat coming from engine different then normal. What would you people check first in trouble shooting this problem? I no people's nytro temp light comes on but this is the first for me

Not sure this will be much help, I have never had a similar issue on my Nytro, but just from a mechanical view of the issue you described. I wonder if maybe you just had an air pocket in the system? Or could you have maybe had some freezing of the coolant (obviously you would have to know if the coolant is newer or old)? Just some ideas.

Tested the coolant in the beginning of season tested good. I don't no how I could of gotten air in the system but thanks for the info

Bad thermostat?
Have you tried riding it again?

I had the same thing (kind of) a few years ago, and it was the fan's relay. But you indicated it was working. Must be air.

Interesting, about the same miles on my 11 xtx and after a long day we were headed back on a long railroad grade and I was on the throttle pretty hard and the light came on. Stopped and I could feel the heat pouring out of the engine. The grade was freshly groomed and so it was very soft and thought that would provide plenty of cooling. Heat exchanger was clear. Babied it back and the temp light stayed off. Although when I started riding harder the temp started going up again.
I had replaced the thermostat at the start of the season since I had a strange low temp situation last season on one ride. I have now added the mtx cooler and last trip all was good. If it happens again in good conditions I'll throw another thermostat at it. Yours might be sticking.
I've also heard the trail tank restricts air flow ifbyou have one. But i had that all last season with no problem.

Another thing I thought of is some people have had issues with ice building up on the exchanger at the front of the tunnel and as it melts it stops touching the exchanger but keeps any more snow or air from making contact and can lead to overheating. Maybe you had something similar that then melted/fell off and then the problem went away?

I had the same issue after 11000km without the light ever coming on. It was snow bridging the front heat exchanger. Built and installed a tunnel block off and it seems fine now. And 75% less ice buildup underneath. I would recommend it.

After talking with allen ulmer he's saying that if the muffler insulation is burnt away down by the flex pipes that it can make the engine run hot due to the muffler heat basically pouring in on the heat exchanger. I ordered some fresh insulation off Amazon and a new thermostat and fan relay hopefully it fixes the problem and we get some fresh snow to try it out.....thanks for the replies guy's

I have replaced the insulation on mine when it was apart a year ago.

I would think that heat would more likely affect the gas tank above it, than bother the heat exchanger.

I ended up buying a new heat shield from Yamaha for 100 bucks due to how important it is. Most of the insulation was burned off. If those hot gases start heating the tank up too much - scary.

Let us know how you made out
Ms
