Alright. I'm starting to get annoyed with my Apex's constant tendancy to hit the rev limiter everytime I nail the throttle. If I remember right from last season, it seemed to do it a few times, but now, I can't hold the flipper all the way in without hearing the dreaded burble at 11,100!
I have a Bender clutch kit with the Heelclickers, a billet helix, and my belt sits just below the top of my secondary by about 1/16". The belt is fairly new, with only about 400 miles on it?? It is the 8DN. (the old part number)
I wasn't sure if I should adjust my secondary so the belt sits higher, or add weight to the primary somewhere.
I don't know what weights the primary has, but I have the sheet.

Add weight to primary. Try 2-3 grams per arm. The belt height in secondary has no effect on shift RPM, only affects the ratio at engagement. You want it snug, but not tight enough to turn the track or squeal.

How are your primary weights set up right now exactly & what are rpm,s from a dead stop to full speed at wide open throttle. Easy to fix if you can give me this info.

I would add weight. Or, ... How tight is the secondary wound? Maybe you could back off that enough to stay off the Rev Limiter.

Here is the info from my spec sheet:

Engage rpm: 4000
Shift rpm: 10200
Rivets:
Heel- w/2 washers
mid- long button head w/2 lock washers
tip- short button head w/ 1 flat washer
Orange spring
4mm shim
Rollers 14.5
HELIX - 06AP1
Setting- 0 & 3
White/Blue spring
Belt 8DN

Hope this helps

change tip to a long button head with another lock washer. this should get ya very close.

10-4
Thanks, I'll give it a whirl.

I would go with Len's option - back off the secondary - fast easy and free to do. Both options pull the rpm down thru the full range of the shift.

To only get that top range you would have to change the secondary last angle or get ramps with a different cut at the end.

Yeah, I think I agree, BBY. Not that I'm a clutch tuning guru or anything....yet. I understand the theory of the clutch very well. I just need to learn more about the fine tuning, and being able to dial in the best performance. I pretty much knew the majority of responses were going to tell me to add weight to the primary, but I wouldn't have known how much to add without trying a bunch of times.
Do most of you guys learn this stuff by trial and error, or is there some reference material somewhere?

aaens clutch tuning handbook is a god send from what I hear! Ive been meaning to order one for about 2 yrs now!

You may also have the belt glazed by now and that will cause rpm to continue to climb. You can try scuffing the belt with emre cloth or replace with new belt/ wash with dish soap and break in for 15 to 20 mi before making any long hard run's but add weight first.

I am wondering about dish soap for cleaning. I know Dawn leaves a slick coating on everything it touches. You can see it on your glasses when you clean them with dawn, even if you rinse a long time with hot water. I would not use Dawn or any product that leaves a coating, for sure. Maybe 409 or something a bit caustic. Then after scrubbing, I swould still scuff it.

Use a dish detergent or nuetral floor cleaner but only 1-2 oz,s in a gallon of water. Most guys use too much & that,s why you get a residue. I work for a chemical manufactering company & see that happening all the time....people use too much product.
