I first noticed a problem when I had my trailer tipped and I tried to put my sled in reverse, The handle would move over to the left but it didn't seam to sit into the reverse all the way and when I tried to hit the gas the sled tried to go forward. So I stopped, put it back in forward and pulled it off the trailer by hand.

Then last night I put it in reverse and it backed up but as it did it made a noise like gears grinding. Like it wasnt all the way in reverse or something.

Then when I got home and backed it into the garage it made the noise again as I backed up but the handle looked and felt to be in the reverse position. Well I started to vear twords the wall so I spiked the brake a little and it made a clunk, I tried to continue backing up and the sled went forward. Once again the handle was over twords the left but now, it didn't seam to be all the way into the reverse position. I put it in forward and back in reverse and it backed up again but it made that gear grinding noise...

Anyone know what this is all about?? Chain too tight maybe??? Or is there some adjustments to be made in the reverse lever linkage????

Thanks guys!!!!

You just need to adjust the linkage slightly. I don't have my manual in front of me and heading up riding shortly but you can look at it to adjust. Watch when you shift to reverse which way the linkage moves, adjust it so it it goes just a bit more in that direction, making it shift into reverse a little farther. The pop was it just popping out of reverse, it doesn't take much. I had to adjust it after some time on both my sleds. Good luck hope this helps

Sounds like the reverse linkage is not adjusted correctly. There is a specific measurement for both the upper and lower link. It's in the service manual that is available for download in a sticky. The upper link should measure 27mm from the inside of one jam nut to the inside of the other, the lower rod should be adjusted so that there is zero free play when in the forward position. If you've taken apart the chain case lately you may have not assembled it correctly and I would, pull it again. Otherwise sounds like the links.

Thanks alot. I'll give it a try today...
Had the same problem after I changed my top gear. The grinding can quickly burr up the gears. The adjust ment is very precise, linkage adjustments are measured in millimeters. Talk to tech at dealer is what I did till I got my pdf manual. I will look up # and post for you.

My Attak is VERY sensitive to the adjustment specs posted above. Mine would grind just like you describe and when I checked the measurements, it was less than a mill out. adjusted to spec and have not heard it grind since. As an engineer, I really appreciate the tolerances of these sleds.

Im in the process of printing the manual. Yes all 683 pages. Then I can put it in a binder and keep it in the shop. Plus I have access to a hell of a printer that can do it in about 5 minutes... Looking good so far.. This should really help answer some questions...

Thanks guys...

I actually have a similar problem.. when it's in reverse, I'll backup just a couple feet and then a loud clunk, then it'll go forward...but, the reverse beep is still going, and the shifter is still in reverse. Thoughts?

Zimmr6, I think your having the same issues as me. Go to the "apex faq section" and click on the manual. You can open it and look at how to adjust your reverse. I just printed the entire manual so Im getting myself a binder to put it in. I'll be adjusting my reverse tomorrow..

Thanks Shanks... Is the sled still beeping as though it were in reverse?

I looked at the manual, but am only seeing schematics on the chain housing(pg 4-20). Which page are you specifically referring to show what needs adjusting?

Thanks!

Hey Shanks, any luck on getting your reverse fixed? If so, can you point me to the section/page in the manual that covers the adjustment?

Thanks!

Hey zimmr I did get it adjusted and it seams to shift better but I have not had the chance to get it out and try it yet. I'll go look in the manual and find the page and post it.

Had a similar issue with mine last year.... go in reverse but when under 'strain' either grind gears or jump in forward. Had it tumble off my deck ramp once when it went forward unexpectedly (thanks Yamaha). :o|
Anyway brought it back to dealership and they said was a common issue, although not reconized by Yamaha... adjusted linkage to 31mm and haven't had a problem since.
Would of been interesting what Yamaha's position would of been if there was an injury.

Ok It starts at the bottom of 4-23 It says "adjustment steps" It tells you to adjust the "lever rod" until it is at 27mm. This is the horizontal rod. Then on the next page(4-24) it tells how to adjust the "shift rod" This is the vertical rod that is lower in the sled.

The wording on page 4-24 is difficult to follow but all I did was use a small tape measure to adjust the top (horizontal) rod to 27mm (or as close as I could) Then on the lower (vertical) rod I loosened the lock nuts and turned it until it was as tight as I could get it by finger and then backed it off about 1/4 turn.

The sled does shift in and out of reverse better now and feels like it goes into reverse farther than it did but I have not had a chance to try it out yet...

To answer your previous question... Yes my reverse beeper did continue to beep and my shifter appeared to stay in reverse eventhough the sled was trying to go forward. I'm pretty sure you have the same problem as me.. I will let ya know as soon as I get a chance to try it out.. (Tuesday or Wednesday). lemme know if you have any more questions...
