What effect will simply raising the needle clip position ( towards lean) 1 clip have on a completely stock setup (135 Mains, Stock Airbox with no mods etc.)....
Idle
Top End
Fuel Consumption (MPG's)
I know that there will be SOME affect but how much? Is it noticable ? has anyone done this ALONE?
Thanks

I talked to a guy in UP late last year that did that & was getting 18mpg!
Said he was at 14-15 before that! Idled good, & didn't care about speed or quickness but said it pulled better he thought!!!
I'm trying to find someone that went 1 size bigger on mains then leaned the needles 1!?!?

Yeah I raised my clips 1 position on the weekend so I am curious as to what will happen to top end! The 18 MPG sounds sweet!!! I have not touched the jetting yet but may try 137.5's in the middle of the season. I am very concious of MPG's as we ride long days with quite a distance between fill-ups but like most of us here I like top-end and I WANT IT ALL. 8)
Raising or lowering the needles will only effect 1/4 - 3/4 throttle.
It will have no effect on top end.
It will have no effect on top end.

Hey that's really good info Blue! I never knew that. That would explain the increase in MPG's that BRX was talking about...3/4 throttle is where I do most of my riding!

I leaned my needles 1 notch last year 1/2 way thru the season. I didn't notice any differance at all. I did change jets when I went out west to 130 but I whent back to stock jets when I got back.
brx, I raised my needles one notch(lowered clip) and went with 137.5 main jets, My fuel mileage increased by 2 mpg, it seemed a tad rich at 1000 ft and on mild days, I then added the mbrp exhaust and that made it perfect, the milage went up another notch however the sled was getting more miles on it as well but the jetting and needles did make a nice differance, the exhaust exits are a nice tan colour now instead of the black they were before i put the pipe on

I've lowered the needles 1 notch on my '03 shortie and got 18 mpg on hardpack trails. Mains stock at 135. I've found that my sled pulls the highest top end speed on days with temps around 0 to -5 C, and gets slower as temp drops. Is it possible the stock main jets makes it too lean for good top end in cold weather? I'm thinking of richen the mains to 137.5 and keep needles as they are set now to make top end better.

That was my thinking!
Go bigger on mains & leaner on needles!!!!!!
Fatter mains should make fuel more available at needles!?
Mpg should still be good, clean up bottom end & have more gas for top end!!!!!!!!!!
Hope this makes sense to someone else too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I'll be the dumby here. What position are the needles in stock? #3 is what my manual says but honestly I have never looked. I too am thinking of leaning my needles one full position. I ride the mountains and have the Holtzman ATACC on now and want to have a good initial calibration and my exhaust cones are black as heck. It looks like there are half positions like 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 ect.
This is exactly what I was referring to when I mentioned getting a Dyno jet kit for the R-1 motorcycle. Maybe it's a better setup? I just don't have the balls to try it just yet.
Fatter on mains, leaner on needles huh? Is that your final answer? PB
