I just installed a new clutch belt a couple days ago. I scrubed the edges like you are suppose too with just soap and water. I went riding yesterday and it squeeled all afternoon at idle. Why? I just thought maybe it would "break-in", but it never stopped doing it. It is so annoying! Of course it only does it sitting and idling when everyone is around. Any ideas? Thanks.

Add or remove (I can't remember which without looking at it) the shims where the bolts are at the back. Also, as Bad Yukon says, you may need to replace the bolts because the ends of them wear down and do not function. Your belt is probably riding too high on the secondary...shimming or de-shimming will drop the belt slightly in the secondary and your squeal will be gone.

Aaron, how much does your belt stick above the secondary sheave? About 1/8" is what you want. If it's more than that the belt isn't long enough to go around the primary center shaft without squeeling.

You'll need to add one washer under each of the small 8mmm bolts on the inner side of your secondary clutch. If that doesn't cut it, add two under each bolt.

Good luck

Take the three small bolts out of the back side of the secondary clutch, remove the shims from each bolt,re-install the bolts. If the shims have already been removed then replace the bolts.Linc

I just went out and looked at it and it is perfectly flush. According to the chart above that is ok huh? Also, Sled Dog are you messing with me? I don't see any arrows or indicators.

No most belts are meant to run a certain direction. If they are meant to run one direction it should say on it. If it doesnt then I would not worry about it. I have not looked at my belt for quite some time but I thought for sure they were directional. Is it a yamaha belt or after market?

I just checked the RX-1 manual and no where does it say about belt direction so I guess it dont matter. Sorry I thought for sure they were directional.

I have seen directional belts...but my rule of thumb is when replacing a belt or taking it off and putting it back on, I always have it so the writing is facing me. So, it always goes in the same direction. Don't ask me if it makes a difference, it's just to be consistent. I don't want to lose any mental hp.

If the belt is still squealing even if the belt sits flush with the secondary, then it could mean that the sheaves are not offset properly.

You're not exactly wrong.
They become directional after they've been run.....meaning that you should re-install it so it turns in the same direction as it did before you took it off. The easy way to remember this is always install it so the lettering is right side up when you pull it over the pulleys.

Didnt the belts used to be directional? Built to take the stress one way only.
