Yesterday i went sledding

Last Tuesday we have had rain, lot of rain suddenly temp drop from 3°c to -25°c, snow became crusty on top 1 inch and more thick

My sled is fitted with new mountain skis. They are very very good in powder and sticky and wet snow, but with this crusty snow, they are terribly dangerous, and i'm careful with word.

The small lips on each outer side is so cutting that ski bite from one side violently and you pull on steering then on the other side, and this for as long as youre gooing forward, then more you move , front suspension compress and sled tend to out of control, like a bike that rear want to pass front. I dont know the how to really explain that in english, but be careful. The best you can do is keep a slow constant pace, if you slow down, it's even bad.

Yesterday, i must follow other track were snow was broken, i can't ride over 30 mph. And if youre asking you the question, my sled is setup for low pressure on ski.

Ski cut crust on top of snow , they are not broking it, thing that normally i have expect.

Tundra, An Afraid guy of Crusty snow now :ORC ( i have miss my chance to roll it on a lake at the beginning of the day :D )

i was going to buy the mountain ski's, but after reading this i think im doing perfectly fine with the stock ones.

no, they are the best thing so far with anti ratchet i done to my sled, they worth it, except on crusty snow

I know I am in the wrong forum but thought I would comment.

I found my 2004 Warrior to be exactly the same in crusty snow with the OEM ski's.

Totally out of control and near impossible to drive.

I had to do the same as you Tundra. Follow someone else.

SLP Powder Pros do the same thing. Trade off is worth it in my opinion. The added floatation in deep snow is exactly what is needed to help get that heavy front end out of the powder.

 I have also noticed the same thing! the snow around here is getting pretty bad Spring Riding conditions, although when I get on the 04s they are a little better than the o5s but it changes when the snow does go figure :o|

I have Simmons skis and have not had that problem, But maybe I have not been in as crusty snow as you are talking about. Anyone notice this problem with simmons skis?

I have this same problem with my 04' warrior. It's all over the place and scary!! My old 98 600XT had steel skis and wider ski skins on it, it never had this problem at all. I think it is because the plastic skis have a sharper edge on the side that is constently cutting into the snow making it go where ever it wants (kinda like a rudder on a boat). What kind of plastic skies are out there that have a rolled edge on the outside? They might help in these conditions.

Why don't anybody just try the ski's for the RS Venture TF? They are the same width as the Mountain ski's, but they don't have a "step" in the underside. I have found them to be just about perfect! The only thing might be that they are not quite so aggressive as the mountain ski's, but in comparasing to the Warrior I had last year, I would take the Venture TF (and Viking) ski's anyday!
