Hey everybody. Got 03 with 9000 miles (mint shape though) for my wife and 05 with 2500 miles for myself. Rode all winter and we Love them. Removed skids from both, repaired/re-inforced W arm on 03, Replaced swingarm with new yamaha re-inforced one on my 05 as it busted @ 2600 miles... did bearings, wheels, sliders, bushings etc etc... I gave both full tune-ups and adjusted everything as per mtce manual. I have 2 questions. I've seen adds with people selling RX1 saying stuff like"only 4000 miles... completely rebuild motor"...???? Has anyone had a catastrophic failure of this famous bullet proof engine? if so what went wrong and why... or are theses simply idiots running them out of oil or antifreeze? My other question... 03 does 108 mph and 05 does 115 mph on speedo on good days... do i have myself a couple of dogs here ? I have not touched clutching yet... but skids are rolling like butter.... 1.25 ripsaws on both are even a touch loose to help. Weight transfers on both are maxed cause I like the ski's up.... I'm 250 lb plus gear!! Maybe it's just my fat #*$&@ eh ???

the engines are quite durable but as with anything man made, chit happens. very few stock motors had problems. some of the 03"s burned oil, bad rings. your speeds are fine if mph, but something is very wrong if its kph. weight of rider affects acceleration but is minimal at top speed. your max rpm on these engines should be 10200-10700. if you dont pull these rpm"s on top then your speed will be down.

Thanks Grader... Yes that is in MPH. Just seems some of the guys are getting like way higher speedo reads than that on stock sleds. i realize the speedo's are way off too. To tell you the truth I never looked if i am getting peak rpm... will try to glance next time... northwestern ontario...? Kenora? Gods Country ?

Those speeds are fine 118-122 mph is about max under perfect conditions.

Well I can tell ya that if the motor was rebuilt it was not due to a failure on the trail. Having blown 2 there is very little left to salvage from a motor when they let go. Both threw rods without notice wiping out the cranks banging pistons off the heads and blowing fist size holes in the rear of the block. Starter and coils and very little else left.

Yamadog,

So there are failures... Everyone I've talked to figures theses motors will go forever... The sled will be done and the motor will still be going... remove it and us it for a really fast go-cart they say... Even yamihaha manual says valve adjust at 25000k and carry on. Or is it just luck of the draw...?

I dont know they say that but that is if it makes it to 25,000. I think it depends on riding style its a lot of stress on the motor if the sled is hooking up right. I think the 1st motor was an oil pump - luck of the draw. still don't know on the second so pissed off its still in the sled out back $6,000 paper weight.

I'll be pissed too if mine grenades. Your right about the stress... plus the constant high rpm... it never saw that in the bike frame....

Yeah the rotational mass of the track through the clutching and chain case with gearing step downs is quited a bit diff. than what you see on a sport bike with a small contact patch of the rear tire. Not to mention 120 mph to locked up track in zero seconds and backshifting clutching.

I'm getting tears in my eyes... that poor little motor getting kicked in the teeth like that... I'm gonna go give it a hug and apologize to it right now. Maybe it will forgive me for yet another season...
