Hey guys Im brand new to the sport, I just purchased an 04 RX1 with 146 miles!!! I got to ride it once and LOVED IT. The only thing is I would love to hear some pro's advice. Are larger "wider" skis a plus on an RX1? Im sure it would give me more flotation. Do they help you with turning? I have read some people saying something about having the rear suspension mounted in the upward position? What does that mean? Ive been on banshees all my life, had an R1, and I gotta say that this thing is FUN!!!!!! Any advice on a better riding experience would be awesome.

Welcome!! You are now a member of a select, and (by the number of Tons (RX-1's) I'm seeing parted out) a shrinking group. First, are you trail riding? Climbing? Boondocking? What combination? Does your sled have any mods? For starters....Carb water shutoffs? Updated floatbowls? Next, are you willing to tweak with things? A lot of people start with the RX-1 because of the unique engine. And it is awesome. I don't know street bikes, but I would guess the R1 street bike was a great complete packge. Unfortunately the RX-1 sled was not. I weighed my stock RX-1 in at 635lbs, no fuel. Today's comparable two strokes are all 500lbs and less. The weight is not as big a deal on the trail, but as soon as you get off it kills you. If you are going off trail, this post is a starting point to show how to shed some serious weight and improve handling:

Our riding group has ten sleds (one turboed) running with similar mods and has had alot of opportunity to head-to-head compare the impact of different changes to the sled. Also, there are also a lot of great people on this site who have tons of experience with different skids, skis, clutching, gearing, tracks, and they all are happy to give you a hand. Congrats!

Hey man thanks for the info. Yeah it being a Yamaha was the biggest thing to me and knowing it has the R1 engine in it just sold the snowmoble for me. Plus the deal I got an an 04 with 146 miles I just couldnt pass it up. Im normally a 2 stroke only offroad type guy, but when you talk about the 4 cylinder R1 engine yeah you cant go wrong there.

I honestly dont know what carb water shutoffs are. Everything on this sled is stock. I do alot of climbing, and cutting and I wont be on trails much at all because of the 2" lugs on the track. What kind of information do I need to know about different skis? I ride with my bro in law who has a Polaris Dragon. His skis are twice as wide as mine and Im sure with the weight on the front of mine I would get alot more flotation out of them. Are they beneficial to turning, boondocking, and just all around enjoyment? Other than four wheelers and motorcycles Im totally new to "riding" snowmobiles. I loved it though, I can tell a difference in weight from my RX1 to my bro in laws Dragon but I love the way this thing runs. Is the holz suspension alot better than the factory shocks?

Thanks again

Is your RX-1 a "mountain sled" with the 151" track. I am assuming it is?

Yes, I have tried many skis and it's tough to do much better than the Yamaha mountain skis (not your narrow ones).

They came stock on the 05 RX-1M and the Apex still uses them. They are cheap and available (look in the classifieds) and they bolt right up.

You need to sit down and read soem of the posts. Many of us bought our RX-1s in mid 2002 and have been modding them and riding them problem free ever since.

There are a ton of ideas on here.

Frosty
