I'm looking at installing a mpi trail turbo on my 2014 viper. The problem is that we do some long distance riding that doesn't always have premium or the freshest fuel stops available. I'm wondering what my options are if there's only 87 octane fuel available? I've heard good things about Torco fuel additive to boost to 91 octane. Is there a simple way like an electronic boost controller to shut down the turbo so it's not producing boost and is it safe to do so?

Torco is good stuff, not much else I trust.

I have a hi/low boost switch on mine that I got from Ulmer. If fuel is questionable simply hit the switch and it lowers boost. It’s not an electronic setup, it t’s into the hose going from the wastegate actuator to the compressor on the turbo. Mine drops boost 3 psi when it’s switched to low, but I run higher boost. With low boost it could be setup to drop from say 5 psi down to 3 psi.

I was thinking of a switch like that to switch from 5 lbs boost to 0 if you hit the switch. Be like turning it back to naturally aspirated till you get better fuel but that just sounds too simple lol Even if it was a manual boost controller that you could plumb in and have access to it.

I have used Lucas oil octane booster in my sidewinder with hurricane knock protection. I have had the knock protection flash then stopped and added the Lucas octane booster as it says on the bottle. After that I did not have knock with that fuel load.

Won’t be able to have zero boost. Even with no preload on the wastegate actuator you’re still going to have a few psi..if u have zero boost then the wastegate will just be open and that’s no good. If by chance the actuator will allow for say 3-4 psi with zero preload you’d be all set.

Sell the viper and buy a sidewinder. 240 hp on 87 octane with knock protection.

Great topic guy's, but when fuel is questionable or lower octane rating, just don't pin it and no long pulls, you'll be ok on 87, the mpi low boost only makes about 4.5#'s boost in most trail riding elevations, when you pin it's when it jumps to 5.5-6psi for a second or two. Here's what I would do, get the mpi mountain setup with out the eabc cause cause it's cheaper, ditch the gems fuel controller and give Dave a call at hurricane performance, he'll sell you a Power Commander fuel controller with his map to run up to 6 psi on 87 octane safely.
