I am a new owner to my Nytro and all of my riding is done in the UP in michigan. I would like to know what can be done to this sled to make this sled as decent of a trail sled as possible while keeping the ability to do some boondocking as well. i have a 2008 yamaha nytro mtx i recently picked up, it has the powderhound skis on it i am wondering if there are better skiis to use for trail/ boondocking? thanks for the help

I haver a 09' MTX. I put a set of 8" powder hounds w/6" shapers on it and think it trails pretty well. I move the spacers to the widest setting for trail and narrow it up for out west. Keep in mind that it is a mountain machine. I know my wife could out run me in the twistys but she would be stuck all the time out west. I did a little off trail in Northern MN in the wide setting and thought it was great.
I ride my 09 mtx (162 se skid) on trails quite a bit as well (MN/WI). It all comes down to what is your goal with the sled on the trails. Sure i can't keep up with a 121 in the tight turns, but overall, it keeps up.
I have the stock mountain skis, i have the sway bar removed and the stock springs tightened all the way up on the front to stiffen them up a bit. I was going to reattach the sway bar for trail riding but found I didn't mind how it was without it.
Just make sure you run scratchers as well to help cooling and slide wear. I also put on extra wheels from OFT to help with the slide wear when trail riding as well.
Handling, it will really come down to your goal.

I used the Yamaha MTN skis last season and actually feel that they trailed better than the powder hounds i run this season. In the powder, well thats a different story...

swelly said:Hands down the Simmons Gen III's. Have ridden them on the trail and they work great. At 8" wide they also work well in the fluff and in the tree's. Very predictable.
Agreed, I have the Gen 3's as well and the off and on trail handling has improved A LOT.
I cut my track down to 1.75, added scratchers, and put on the pioneer wheel kit and it seems to do pretty well on trails and in the fluff.

Stick with the Yamaha for sure,,,
I am unimpressed with the aftermarket belts...
Yamaha is also one of the most reasonable priced oem belts out there.
