i thought i read a post on here about k&n oil filters i could use on my nytro? my yamaha dealer is closed today and i need to know if i can use a aftermarket oil filter, and what number?

thanks

You'll want the socket type filter wrench that fits over the end of the filter for remove'n the old filter and torque'n the new one on...

Don't have the manual in front of me but tighten but I believe its 12 ftlbs... (make sure the old filter oil ring gets removed)

it's the same filter that's on a raptor.

I used a hiflofiltro #HF147

No special tools required - just a pipe wrench to get the original one off!!!

as mentioned - make sure you peel off the o-ring that might get left behind.

i ordered a hiflo hf303 (was told this would work).
apparently the same filter used in a yamaha rhino.

hmm after finding/looking at pictures the 303 looks longer... hope it fits? =\

edit: found some more info.
napa gold 1358:
can length = 2 7/8" (2.875")
width of element = 7/8 (.875)
hiflo hf303:
can length = 3"
width of element = 1 5/8 (1.625)
k&n kn147: (assuming same as a hf147)
height = 2.46
k&n kn303:
can length = 3" (w/o nut, nut adds ~3/8 [0.375])
width of element = 1 11/16 (1.6875)
height = 3.346 (with nut)
wix 51358:
height = 2.782"

go to any yamaha microfiche and look up the part # for the filter on your nytro.

now, get outta the snowmobile section and move you're cursor over to the atv section.

repeat steps above, except this time look under yamaha Raptor 660.

you'll note that the part #'s are IDENTICAL.

My yamaha dealer has been selling me the hiflo's for my raptor since 2003. never had a problem and they are 1/2 price of the oem filters.
they are a DIRECT replacement for your sled. as there are others - K&N,
Wix, etc.

but if you're buddy thinks your a sh!thead for using an aftermarket oilfilter, then, I guess I'm a sh!thead too!!

by the way - I use aftermarket synthetic oil for my sled. wonder what he thinks of that??

;):D

asweet must not be very technical, or he must work at a ford garage where thay follow everything by textbook lol

i bought a WIX filter 53158 which is alittle longer. you can not use a filter wrench because it is longer though. instead, i used a piece of rubber that is used for opening jars, not a problem to get 12 ft-lbs of torgue on it ;-)

does anyone check the engine oil pressure after? the service manual says to loosen a bolt to see if oil comes out or not, but i could not find it for the fife of me. the owners manual doesnt say anything about it but the service manual does.

edit3: oh, and for 1 reason not to use an OEM Yamaha filter? read this: http://www.tobycreek.org/oil_filters/yamaha.shtml
granted, I dunno if this is how the Nytro filter is built, or if Yamaha still makes them this way. but rather avoid it if possible..

i couldn't find the exact 53158 pn on their website.

edit1: after some more research, it looks like you may have meant 51358, which is cross referenced against the hf-303 and kn303 filters (mentioned above).

The wix filter # is 51358 which is almost the same as a napa filter cept -5 prefix cuz they make them also. I have yet to see a poorly made wix filter in any application to date... LOL The concept of using all OEM parts would get kind of bore'n in the real world unless your a lemming...

but glad i'm not the only "dip$hit" in this case, looking for a better product to use in place of oem.

i spose i'm a real big dip$hit for having a turbo'd sled too.. /shrug
