This will be my third Yamaha since 2006, I never tried a Nytro and I have always been a long track guy. i was thinking it would be fun to try a short track sled again and if so I would go with the RTX SE or just the RTX for 2011. I really like the shocks on the race replica and the rear suspension seems a little more beefy.
Has anyone used iceage rails or extended a Nytro 121 to 136 or 144?? I was wondering how the longer track handled if it was not tipped. I saw that Ultmer had a 121 to 144 with a small degree of tip but I thought iceage rails would be stronger.
The XTX looks awsome and I guess everything would be done already but I wont get the shock package and I would think the 121 would act more playful on the trail with wheelies and hitting jumps.
What to do what to do hahaha....I spend time at night thinking about this in bed and pondering my choices hahaha lol. Any input would help, I have 2 weeks to make up my mind and place an order, thanks.

I just went thru this debate. I decided on an SE and I'm going to extend to 136" for the reason that the SE skid looks much stronger then the XTX. I don't trust that tipped up section at the back.
THe first thing everyone said is the approach angle is different between the sleds and the XTX is better off trail because of it.

hey revster thanks for the input....what are you going to use to make it a 136 inch track, tracks USA or iceage rails?

Went with 136 extension w/ 144 tunnel extension. Have to say ride quality is much improved. Top end down slightly.
Only drawback was hyfax wear increased at bend of rail. This occured whether track was tight, or practically falling off the sled. Larger diameter wheels solved these issues right away. The extension kit was just part of upgrades done last year and luv it now. More to come this fall.
I don't have an RTx,so hygear suspension upgrades are coming. If an aggressive rider would highly recommend. I've driven both and there is quite a difference between sleds.

I haven't picked up extensions just yet but I don't think you can go wrong, lots of good products out there. All I've decided is that I'm going 136 (not tipped up.)

I went the RTX SE extended route as well, just because I did not trust the skid of the XTX. If my 62 year old father can crack and bend this skid, what will happen after I am done with it...???
I went with 136" extensions with 6 degree kick-up and a Back Country 1.75" track (and loads of other modifications as well). Huge improvement off trail, small improvement in comfort on trail and basically no drawbacks. I do not care about top speed, anyone who does should get an old SRX instead...
If you go the XTX route you need to do something about the skis and the track anyway. A short track sled with proper track will humiliate a box stock XTX, also off trail.

I have a 2009 RTX SE. It's my second 09 RTX se. the first one I totaled. I to am a long track guy. I will tell you this I hated my first RTX se as a long track. The Nytro isn't a good trail long track sled. The one I bought to replace the total I left as a 121 and I love it compared to my long track one. If you like to ride fast in the trails at all keep it a 121. There is plenty of suspension there to handle the bumps you don't need the extra length.
Also I've ridden two XTX's . I'd never own one. that is not a trail sled. sorry!!!

stretched my nytro se to 136 with tracks usa extensions. I liked it, I didn't notice any negatives to stretching it, other than it wouldn't fit in my damn short trailer. But it was way more fun off trail. The tracks usa tunnel extension is the nicest looking tunnel extension I've seen, It goes inside the stock tunnel and honest to god it looks factory, no gaps and its very strong.

By the way your sled looks sick bro...How so you like the Nytro all in all for trail riding? Hows the fun factor?
I'm sure you get cold but is the wind that bad on that sled?

Sleddingfarmer those wheels look really great on that skid, I used a track USA back in the day for my Fathers XCR 800 to make it a 136....we bolted it together and took it to a good welder and he through some beads of aluminum where the two pieces meet. The skid on the XCR still holding up today but I'm not riding it hahahaha LOL....anyways thanks for all your comments, I love the shock package on the SE model and I guess riding it a year being a shortie would be fun sooooo....I don't know this sucks hahaha

I am close to a 50/50 ratio for trail / off trail use and I would say that the fun factor in both cases is 100% - it is simply the best and most enjoyable sled I have ever had...! As one of my riding buddies said - as close as you will ever get to a reliable Assault...
Wind protection does not exist, but in my opinion, this is a non-issue on this type of sled.

I got almost 2500 miles on those extensions, they are tough, not necessary to weld them together...but I did put a couple extra bolts through them.
The shock package is nice, but as stiff as it seems at first, it sure bottoms easy. The shock valving is all messed up...its really stiff and rough for small bumps but it blows through the travel quite easily in the big stuff. A shock revalve is definitely needed to make it work right in my opinion.
If you want to go off trail at all, you'll need more than the 121 with the ripsaw. I bought the SE because its cheaper to stretch it than it is to take a xtx and buy the shock package of the SE or something similar. Also, are you going to run studs? If you are, I'd look at the arctic cat 1.375 track. Tracks usa sells it with an extension package too.

Sleddingfarmer I was going to ask you about your studs, what length stud are you running and can you run that 1.375 track with the stock extro drivers and studs?

I'm running 144 woodys megabites 1.450" Yeah the 1.375 would fit with the stock 9 tooth drivers, and I would still just run a 1.450 woodys. You wouldn't get a ton of penetration but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I've heard its a pain to replace that front heat exchanger. But I think you'd also be fine running a fast trac 1.5" stud too.
I know with a 2 inch paddle track I can still fit my fingers between the lugs and the heat exchanger so there is decent room up there.
Yes icing is a problem in certain conditions but for the most part its not too bad... I just don't look under the sled then its not that big of a problem at all haha. I'm gonna rig up some sort of block off plate for next season. Or at the very least get the schmidt brothers block off plate. I think schmidt brothers block off plate and a ceramic coated header pipe would make a huge difference.
I'll tell you where it was a problem, when I was out west and it was like 30 degrees and I was playing in powder and getting stuck all day...it got really bad.
