I pulled my bent 2009 subframe and started installing the updated 2010 frame. I've heard the 2010 gussets are made of a stronger material but other than being told that I can't see anything different. The plating is the same thickness and nothing new was added. These frames look identical and I don't see any markings other than the new part number on the invoice. So my question is how do you know you really have 2010 frame and if it is the newest version is it really stronger? I have my doubts. Take a look at the attached photo of the Yamaha box that the frame shipped in. The new part number partially covers the old 2009 number. Did they just resticker the 2009 frame? I checked the frame for a stamped part number and couldn't find one.
Any reports of the 2010's bending?

I had heard I think one of the mountain guys bending a 2010 already. I also have a "2010" but I welded my own plates in it hoping to strengthen it

Bent my 2010 subframe and just put a new 2010 one on. I have seen the 2009s and they don't look any different and the plate does not "feel" thicker. Got me thinking the same thing... Did Yamaha just change the part number and call them "updated"?
I remember Port Yamaha on here was the first to say the 2010 have a thicker plate.

Edit: Now reading that post I see port says "material change" not thickness. Not sure what they used as a material but for $400 I sure hope it was GOLD.

What did you add to strengthen it? I've been throwing around a few ideas but would like more input before making a decision. Any pictures?

Yamaha has always been good about just changing part numbers. Same product they just superceed the part number to the same product. I remember when I worked in a dealership 10yrs ago they always did this back then also. Alot of times it was hard to find parts for yamaha stuff.

I believe Port Yamaha reported that the 2010 frame had a material change to the gusset. If so, I'd like to know where they got their information or was it all speculation on their part. From what I'm hearing the 2010 frame is bending also so even if their was a change it's irrelevant. What really ticks me off is that I bought a $400+ part thinking I was getting an upgrade when I should have just strengthened my 09 frame.
I've done a mock up on additional support for my 2009 and 2010 frames and I'm looking for input on my design. http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php?t=87758

I read about the updated 2010 frame and other 2010 updates like the beefed up header in a folder at my Yam dealer. There may have been some 09 frames left over and they just retagged them with the new number to keep it simple?

Simple? Are you talking about the Yamaha engineers that designed this rough trail subframe? I ordered the frame with the belief that I was getting an update not a retagged inferior part that should be pulled from the shelves. If they advertised a stronger frame for 2010 and sell the 09 as if it were the 2010 upgrade they're assuming we're the simple ones. It makes me question my Yamaha loyalty.

For me:
Subframe 1 (2008): loading it on a two place trailer 10 days after I bought it. The carbine caught the metal lip on the trailer. It DID NOT stop the sled from going onto the trailer. I just washed it prior to loading it up and it was straight after I loaded it I noticed that it was bent!
Subframe 2 (2010): Was out west riding really slow for a buddy to catch up to me. I was looking over my shoulder while driving 3-5mph. I hit a log under the snow with the ski. It stopped the sled and I was jerked forward. Right away I jumped off the sled to look if it was bent... YEP!
Subframe 3 (2010): Brand new (0 miles) so it better not be bent!
I have to say that prior to bending my second subframe I hit a creek wall that put me over the handlebars and bent both my lower a-arms and spindles. I thought for sure my subframe was going to be bent but it was still straight. I guess that just proves that it can take hits head on but when one ski catches something or at the right angle it just gives in.
