Well looking at getting a nyto and i know i want it to be a 144. Looking at a 09 up. Ive heard and read that the xtx has a lot of rear suspension issues as far as sag and ride. What difference is their between a xtx suspension/ride and buying a 121 and extending it to a 144. Cost would be about the same so either way is fine. Im just looking for the best/easiest set up. Mostly trail ride and boondoc when it presents itself. My buddy does have a 121 extended to 144 and seems pretty happy with it except in the corners. Just looking for some opinions from the guys that ride and work on these sled. Thanks chris

xtx

I have have a XTX and the sag was an issue, Hygear spring spacers helped to a degree. This year I installed the Star Suspension kit and no more sag plus a much better set up. $300, easy to install and much better ride and transfer over stock.

Ran my 121 extended to 144 with the oft tip up rail extensions for a full season and never had a problem with cornering. Used the 144 back country and loved the whole set up for trail and off trail riding here in southern MN.

I read up on that star suspension kit, and it looks like it fix's a lot of the skid problems. I was just wondering if the 121 extended to 144 has the same issues. My buddies extended nytros dont seem to have the sag issues the xtx does. But i know extensions can mess up geomety of the skids.

I had an 08' that I ran with a 136" OFT extension and loved it. The only problems were that I had to add extra wheels right in fron of the tip-up in the rear of the skid, revalve the shocks, and add stiffer torsion springs because of longer scissor effect.
I own a 2011 XTX now and found a few tricks that basically eliminate the sag. Overall it would probably be cheaper to buy an XTX, but you would get more track choices with stretching a 121 since you'd have to buy a track anyway. I do wish my XTX had a 1.5" or 1.75" lug.

Hope this helps.

With thte kind of winter you guys are having, would you really want more than a 1.25" track?

When I bought my XTX I was living in Ontario, and I remember guys here saying how it should come with a 1.75, but to me, then, living where I was, that would've made the sled useless. I wanted a 144 because I like to play off trail, but more importantly I needed to be able to stud the track and run trails.

Since moving out east I've put a 1.75" on it because we get loads of snow, and it's really rare that studs would make any difference whatsoever.

Putting a 1.75" on all XTX's would be a bad move on Yamaha's part, and while it hardly warranted a special release, I think introducing the option of a 1.75 while keeping the 1.25 as the main track option was a good move on Yamaha's part. I just think they should get rid of the garbage Ripsaw.

Don't get me wrong. The 1-1/4" Isn't a bad track for the XTX. It's gotten me out of a lot of hard spots. The thing is that I don't ride unless there is something worth riding in, so a 1.5 or 1.75 can only be that much nicer in the soft stuff.

What I don't understand is why ANYONE would put picks in a 144" track. If you're going to trail ride enough to justify studs, you should stick with a 121 or 136. The Rotational Inertia of adding 15 lbs of studs to a 144" track reduces your acceleration by about 25% and greatly decreases flotation in the powder. That's just silly IMO.
