I got to talking about changing the oil filter which I did for the first time last Spring on my Apex. I could not remember if I checked for the old seal or not. I still had the old oil filter and I am pretty sure it has the seal everyone is referring to.
Could someone please tell me if this is the only seal before I tear the sled down again to ease my mind!

which filter is everyone using?
Do the seals sometimes stick on or something? I too just changed my oil for the first time, and although I'm 99% sure the seal was attached to the old filter, I should probably check the trash can to be sure!

just get in the habit of wiping down the filter mount face and do a visual. From then on you will have no gasket worries

As Tork said get in the habbit of cleaning the mating surface and you won't have any worries. Also when you are installing the new one make sure you wipe a little oil on the new seal. This will keep the seal from bonding to the engine when it comes to removing it. Plus it will aid in installation as it won't scrape or damage it while it seals to the motor.
That picture is the worst case I have seen, I wouldnt loose sleep over it.
Good advise, make it a habit to just wipe the case.
