My 2007 Apex MTX started leaking around the oil filter about 3-400 miles after I had it in the shop for a bulk heaad repair last winter. I figured the filter got bumped/bent during repair so I replaced it and changed the oil and it started leaking again after about 3-400 miles. The first time I tried to tighten it ever so slightly and that made the leak worse. Talking with a friend of mine he was wondering if maybe the stud/pipe that the filter mounts to had loosened not allowing the filter to spin on tight enough to fully seal the oil filter gasket. My question to you guys is how is that filter stud/pipe mounted to the crank case and is this a possibility? Anyone have a motor out of a chassis they could look at for me/pictures? The micro fiche isn't a whole lotta help for this issue.

Thanks Guys!

:rocks:

It should be just threaded in to the housing. I would pull the filter and check the surfaces. Either the gasket from the old filter was left on (a common problem) or the surface itself has been damaged.

You don't need to over-tighten the filter. Too much crush on an o-ring will degrade its ability to seal. The general rule is to twist the filter on until the seal makes contact and then go another quarter to half a turn.

If the o-ring is crushed it can take a set and not recover when heat or time affect dimensional changes.

What the guys said, unscrew the filter and inspect. Get a new filter and install hand tight, remember to oil the o-ring and housing surface or you may damage the o-ring.

When you have the filter off, check if the oil filter mounting bolt is threaded tightly onto the engine block.

Check to see if the threaded nipple is bent (the part the filter screws onto). Even a tiny bend could cause what you're experiencing. I checked the parts catalog and it doesn't list it seperately from the crankcase but you do see it. Don't even know if it screws in or it's pressed on. If it's loose, you'll feel it.

The bolt is strong and you will have to hit it with a sledgehammer to bend it, probably ruin the engine block as well. The bolt is threaded into the engine block, it's a hollow bolt :-)

What brand filter are you using? Could also be a cheap filter. I had a Fram years ago that gushed oil out because the thread wasn't right. It felt fine when I hand tightened it but it didn't go all the way. Stay away from cheap brands. Even though they say "Quaker State" or "Pennzoil", it's made by Fram. Yamaha or K&N is the only way to go. Wix is a good brand for cars but don't know for our appliucations. (I don't know Amsoil filters so can't say anything about them).

Just a heads up!!! did you install the filter?? i have changed mine many times,BUT one time when not paying attention i replaced filter, it started leaking after a few miles took off the filter to inspect and i found that the Old filter Gasket had stayed on the housing and i had 2 Gaskets in fact on LOL just food for thought Cheers

Thanks guys, I will pull it apart later this fall and check for the second o-ring. I do change it myself the first one the started leaking was an Amsoil filter with Amsoil syn. the second was a Yamaha filter and Yamaha Syn. oil.
