Oil filter warning

I really doubt the design is a problem here, its probably cleanliness or manufactured quality

Just seems like majority of oil filters have flat/square seals.
Like anything else, installed/handled properly, there aren't failures.

Very interesting discussion. That's what I LOVE ;)! about this place!!

Most oil filters DO have square/flat seals though and installed properly I don't believe there are many problems.

GREAT discussion!!! That's what I LOVE about this site ;)! ;)!

--- cut open a fram or carquest filter sometime and compare to a yammi, toyota, wix or napa premium filter somtime and then tell me if the savings is worth it . I know I won't put one of those on my new RX1

You know, a guy could probably make his own by putting a sweat sock in a beer can then seal it all up with some RTV.
:ORC

I'm with you Stain, saving a couple bucks on a $10,000 snowmobile that I get to use a couple months out of the year if I'm lucky doesn't make $ense to me. But then using "snowmobile" and "saving money" in the same sentence doesn't make $ense either.
:exc:

It's amazing, (and entertaining) how a small detail (gasket shape) can provoke such a prolonged string of responses. Great stuff!!

However, the decision to buy the Fram filter wasn't prompted by $ savings, as much as convenience..... That and avoiding the dealer confrontation over why Yamaha oil wasn't being purchased as well.(using Mobil 1 synthetic)

Does more expensive = better quality? Sometimes.
Will it provide a significant benefit? Sometimes.
And sometimes it's just mental.

The Denso filter is just a paper filter.

But consider this:
Yamaha suggests a periodic (idiotic?) oil change, with no filter.
Would anybody actually do this?

At 3,000 Kms, average annual mileage (kilometer-age?), and 1 annual oil and filter change, I'm not losing any sleep over my engine's internal fluids.

Well put, Whits-end. Say, if your whits-end, where is whits-middle and whits beginning, and what will I find there?? Just curious, don't you know.

Back to the topic at hand.

Some people like to buy the expensive brand of gas too. But I always look for the cheapest stuff in town. Just habit. Seems like it is a reward to the guy who is willing to take a penny cheaper...that's all. Now if'n you figure out how much money it takes to drive around and find that guy who is cheaper by a penny, you just spent 10 cents agallon trying to save a penny a gallon. Now to many that doesn't make much sense. To me, it make perfect sense. Unless of course, you can hit that penny a gallon cheaper place as you were driving by anyway.

Btw, I have a degree in this field of high finance, obtained by...yep, computer, online. Don't you know I saved a bundle.

Now about those orings and how well they seal.....If you don't put oil in the crank aftewards, you don't have to worry about oil leaking all over the place when it gets to -85 degrees below zero, when your antifreeze will freeze up anyways, so the bugger won't even start, so you might as well stay around the fire, since it is too damned cold to riding around in the snow in the first place.

Any questions?? PM me. Class dismissed. Go wax baby in the garage, and it better be genuine Yammaha wax, or the paint will fall off on the ground, and the OPP will ticket you for screwing up the environment. Now ain't that a kick. :) :o|

Hmmmmm

Those filter evaluations certainly got my attention!
Interestingly, I just read where Fram claimed their 1st pass efficiency at 96%.

Now I won't sleep nights, worrying about my engine's internal fluids, until I get to the bottom of this.......... or maybe just go back to the OEM filter.

Then again, that old sock-in-the-beer-can has possibilities.....Hmmmmm

The Yamaha filter does have the paper ends but its construction is a lot better than the fram he compared it too. I cant see Yamaha overlooking something as important as the oil filter (the kidney and liver) of any engine. More tests should of been done before ptting it in the same league as the cheap poorly built fram filter. Yamaha I believe would have done extensive tests before using this filter. IMHO
