OK, does anyone know if yamaha has a filter wrench to make the oil filter change a little easier than it currently is, without one? I was hoping my RX-1 wrench would be the same, but......... NOT!!!

Anyone try oil filter pliers? They work great on all sizes of car filters, from big deisel trucks to even the tiny toyotas. It's just a matter of the angle you grip the filters with the toothed jaws. Mine are snap-on or macs, but I've had them for 15+ years so they should be everywhere.

When you look in at the filter from the front of the sled, there is not enough room to get those type of plyers around the right side of the filter. I have a set, but have yet to be able to get them on it enough to get it off. I have ordered the yamaha wrench, but will not see it for 2 weeks, and I really want to get the filter swapped and the sled back together for this weekends riding.................. Any ideas from those that go the filter off.........?????

can you bring your new filter to an auto store and fit it with a rachet cap type?

When you put your new filter on, hand tight should be good enough, shouldn't it? My aircraft mechanic friend says there's no reason a filter should be on tighter than that. Thoughts?

I used a 68 mm cap type and I was able to do the job with it! Its a really tight fit over the filter! I had to use a screwdriver to pry it off the filter when done screwing it! The 68 mm wrench is very common.Any ATV dealer should have one in stock... I ordered a 69mm from yamaha but very expensive!!

I used channel locks too. Very tight the rubber seel stayed on the block. I bought a Sears "strap wrench" for the next time. Havn't used it but anticipate big sucess. Should work on many other applications as well. If not add it to the tool collection. loctite your motormount bolts while your in there. Mine came appart. good luck with the filter and reassembly

Filter Wrench I used and recommend
I went to Sears tonight and bought a very handy little oil filter wrench. It has 3 claws on it that tighten up on the filter as you apply the turning power. It is made for a ratchet, but I used a ratcheting box end wrench. In my opinion, it is the perfect tool for the job. Cost was about $12, and I had the filer off in seconds. I would almost argue that it will be better than the one yamaha will sell. It is Sears item #02820523000 Mfr. model #51121SA706

According to my trusty Phazer service manual (8GC-28197-10) the Yamaha filter wrench part number is YM-01469 90890-01469. It's a 'cap' type filter wrench.
