i just picked up a 06 venture rs that has been sitting for a while. Started it up and it ran like cr%% p . Plugs and carbs need cleanin. Whats weird is it appears to be leaking motor oil on that first atsrt up from somewhere. was coming out from under the sled where the 4 bellypan protector bolts would be. in that area anyway. Checked the oil and it appears to be a little over full. Well i ended up taking it for a little drive and appears to have quit leaking. Any ideas where to look for this leak? I am actually very inmpressed with the power and ride with this thing. i want to go for a ride today and i might take it over the attak. any ideas guys, thanks whopp

Make sure the crankcase breather hose is hooked up under your air box.I found it easiest to unhook hose from bottom end,hook top end to air cover,then replace air cover,and rehook bottom of hose.Oil can blow out of this causing engine seizure according to a warning sticker on air cover.If oil level is overfull ,maybe it would blow some out into air filter area even if it was hooked up .

If sled gets overchoked on startup plugs can foul pretty bad. Run as lean as possible when starting and plugs should last a long time. I use Techron injector and carb cleaner in fall to clean things out from storage. Some use Seafoam and most post good results with that. Good luck!

Doesn't sound like it was well cared for, could be anything. There were some posts about cracked oil reserves, do a search on the site for that and take a good look at where it bolts on.

Check the breather tube as was suggested. Make sure the oil level is correct...drain some if yo have to.
If all is OK....take it to the dealer. Let a pro find out what's wrong...IMO

Another source of oil in the belly pan could be the chaincase. When I changed my chaincase oil last month, it ran between the side cover and belly pan after removing the drain plug and made a mess. If someone recently changed the chaincase oil without removing the side cover, there could have been oil down there. For those that have not changed their chaincase oil yet, do yourself a favor and remove the side cover first. It makes the job easier in the long run and also provides a good opportunity to inspect the engine oil tank for cracks. Enjoy your Venture.

make sure that the previous owner didn't change the filter and leave the old o-ring on the filter pickup.

This would be the first thing I would check, otherwise it could cost you a motor. Just my 2 cents.

how many miles are on it and is it leaking on the right side? my oil tank cracked on my 06 Rage at 3500. seems to be a common time when the oil tanks develop small cracks. i guess it's because of the harmonics of the 3 cyl.

All good suggestions and things to look at:
* Old oil filter "O" ring gasket could be still in place.
* Oil tank leak.
* Breather hose does need to be attached properly.
* Chaincase leak.
* If the oil was changed, overfilled, or spilled, some residual oil left in the bottom compartment may have started leaking out.
Better to give the sled a thorough inspection.
RS Venture is certainly not the fastest sled on the planet, however the motor reliabilty is second to none, and the ride is very comfortable.
It being a rental, no telling how the machine was treated.

i looked it over and dont know where it came from, rode it about 20 miles today and nothing at all came out. added the seafoam and drove the bag off it and she now runs awesome. I cant believe this 2 up unit can run 100.00 mph on the dream meter. it is overreving to , it is hitting close to 9000. looking at the specs, i was thinkin of just puuting the same setup as the rage but i would have to change primary spring, rivits in weights and helix and rollers. i think i will just try the helix. i am very impressed with this thing.

If it's over revving check the clutch weights. They may be worn to where the sled won't shift up anymore.
This happened to me last year when I had the sled on "cruise control" just finding a good rpm range and running it for an extended distance day after day. It wore a groove in the weights and the secondary clutch.
Check to make sure the secondary is not grooved as well.
New, my sled would indicate 114 on the dream meter in good conditions, which is probably 102 actual mph.
For a touring sled, RS Venture is a rocket ship.
Hope this helps!
