I have a 2008 Apex GT with just over 4K miles. My wife has complained of my exhaust smelling before. Some of you may remember a thread I started termed 'smelly exhaust'. I just returned from a weekend of riding and had a few guys giving me feedback. They explained that it smelled like burnt oil at lower speeds and when I got off the throttle. I checked the oil and I was down about half a quart in 500 miles. If I am burning oil, what are the possible causes of this? This is a shorty sled in michigan, but I have been running a bunch of powder this year. Is it possible to have something froze up that is causing a build up of pressure somewhere? I'm running Mobil 1 0w30.
my ideas:
1. Vent tube or air box filter froze- easy fix if I find it
2. Valve lash- not sure about this one. I suppose a dealer would need to set this for me.
3. Compression test- maybe I have one or multiple bad rings causing blow-by
Any help would be appreciated on where to look.

If I recall I was telling you last time you posted that this has happen to me as well when ridding in powder that the filter in the airbox freezes and draws oil from the tank into the airbox....when this happen to me I used 1 liter of oil in 200 miles. Sounds like the same thing that is happening to you.
You don't have to rip the sled appart to check this, just release all the clips on the air box and lift the top half of the airbox and pull the filter out and if it's cockadoodle doo stiff you have found your prob.

If this is the problem, can I clean the filter or do I have to replace it?

I would like to know the answer here also. Can you clean the filter and if so with what?

Bring it in the house and dry it out and reinstall it. I have done this many of times.
