It's not rings, the piston ring lands are damaged from detonation and that could have also damaged the cylinder bores. That doesn't typically happen in stock form. If it wasn't boosted, the previous owner likely was spraying it with NOS, then when hurt the engine he put it back to stock to dump it.
I hate hearings these kinds of stories. Once you get the head off it will tell the story. Keep us posted, even it is months down the road.

well I got the engine out today and took her apart, looks like 3 of the cylinders got pretty chewed up the cylinder bores didn't look too bad except for one of the cylinders is gouged pretty good.
From what I think I need it'll cost around $550 in parts for the new cylinder heads, rings and all my gaskets. I think I could hone out the scratches and sand or file down the chewed up bits by the valves. Do you guys think its worth it to fix or should I just bite the bullet on a new motor? I think I could find one for somewhere around $1000.

Don't re-use that block, it's a nikasil bore so honing won't fix that. It will be out of spec for bore size regardless.

That engine is badly damaged. I would cut my losses and find a low mileage engine that has NOT been boosted or sprayed.
The previous owner must have known that engine was damaged...pretty sad.

Will be cheaper to get a used engine.

Ugh some people, boosted or sprayed and tell you its been lady driven and this is what you get. I don't know how people sleep at night knowing theirs problems with something they sold.
