There is no proper oil level on a cold engine. The engine should be warmed up to get proper reading. With that being said any time I have checked the level either warm or cold it was always in the proper range on the stick. So I would say it should show up somewhere on the stick when it is cold. But to get the best reading warm it up.

and after removing the stick and cleaning it dry, you just insert and remove the stick for a reading....you do NOT screw it in and remove it.

My dealer showed me a sled that was in for service that the owner had checked the oil cold, added oil.......hundreds of dollars in damages. Not to mention the mess, oil blowing out all over the place.
