LMAO @ LB. Pretty much sums it up though! Do not use synthetic until you are sure it is fully broke in.

Are you talking about what oil to use after your 500 miles break-in period? Just use the new 4-s yammie 0-30w oil... MM.

Even after its broke in the Yamaha oil is fine. So many worry about engine wear. The engine will outlast the chassis.

ok thanks for the help, but can you tell me why there is synthetic in it when new? so basically i should drain out the & change the filter thats on it now?LazyBastard said:Well lets see... synthetic oil is to reduce wear (friction), and breakin depends on having enough friction to wear everything smooth, so don't use synthetic.

It does NOT ship with synthetic, thats why.

So you guys say to dump the oil that yamaha puts in at the factory? In other words the people who built the engine don't know anything about oil. I have to respectfully disagree on that one. Just use the oil that yamaha put in your engine. Break it in just like the manual says. You will never wear it out.

Yammie puts in the new 4-s "SEMI" syn oil from the factory... Think of it as the best of both worlds.. I used it in my vector last year with terriffic results... It started right up at -16 degrees and it didn't use any oil. By the way, welcome to our niffty little site.. A lot of smart guys post here. MM.

Semi is mineral oil with a little snake oil added.

I run synthetic oil in my rx-1 and seems to make a positive difference. Seems to have smoother startups in very cold temps and idle rpms seem to have raised as well making me think there is less resistence in the motor. I would not recommend running synthetic oil the first season on a new sled though.

Here's something interesting. On my 99Vmax 700 I used to run synthetic- shell snowultra. On very cold starts, I'm talking sub -20C, it was wicked hard to pull over. My buddy with same engine was running mineral, shell advance, his pulled over easier on the same cold morning. I changed to mineral and it was easier to pull on cold starts--- dunno why!! Maybe LB has some insight.
For my new Attak-- I'll break her in on what she comes with and stick with the Yammi 0w30 after. Too expensive not to use what Yamaha wants you to use. Hate to have any issues if I have mechanical problems in the future. KISS principle for me. I'm really looking forward to not having to carry and add 2 stroke oil--

A little clarification here. LB you're right, many of those semi-synthetics on the market are only about 5-15% synthetic.
But if you notice, Yamaha's 0W-30 is called a "synthetic blend". Yam did that purposely because their 0W-30 is about 70% synthetic, way more than the average semi-synthetics on the market. Plus it was made specific for these engines, not just another oil that's been relabeled.
So yes, Yam is shipping sleds with a "mostly" synthetic oil and it's good stuff for break-in and normal use, no need to go to a different oil. It cranks easily at -40, protects better at cold and hot engine temps and the guys with '05 sleds (same oil) are happy with it.
As Slushmonster says, the factory guys have a pretty good idea about what these engines need and I'd go with their experience. Break it in according to the manual and use the 0W-30 and your new 4-stroke should be a very happy camper.

How did you find out the Yami oil is 70% synthetic. Reason I am asking is if they are going to go that far they might as well have gone to 100%. I really doubt it is 70% please verify for us. Thanks
