have you checked the slack in the chain case? that would have been my bet.
a good cleaning of the clutches to remove belt dust would not hurt either.

After thinking about it, I think you are referring to the play in the reverse chain case. It is normal as my apex, both brothers warriors, and other brothers venture all do it. Heck even the 2 stroke chain cases do it as well.
Yamaha left some slack in the engagement so it would go in more easily. There is no way I know of to adjust the play out.
Both 4 strokes I have owned have done it since new, so I thought it was normal. Brothers war with 22000 km has the exact same amount of play when I did chain case bearings last summer. His does clunk more as is a lot more agressive on the throttle and brakes than I am but slowly moving the 1st foot usually stops it on acceleration.
