This post was originally posted on MOUNTAIN forum but I thought it may have some interest here as well.
I rode my sled today for the first time with my Heavy Hitters installed in my RX-1 Mountain. These weights make everything I have ever said good about any other RX-1 weights old news.
I was riding mostly on trails (with a little climbing) at 3-6,000 feet. I initially had a 3/4" allen in the heel, a 7/16 steel bolt with two thin washers in the middle and a 7/16 steel with NO washers in the tip. I was using the stock O/S/O spring with 4 engagement shims in the primary. In the secondary I have the Dalton 54/42 helix with the Yamaha silver spring at 80 degrees.
Initially the sled would go to about 10,300 climbing the trail up the mountain. Then down along the river it would hit 10,600. I went to the airstrip to see how long of legs this setup had. The airstrip was BUMPY but there was a reasonably good line. The first time out I saw 102 on the speedo at 10,600 RPM. I thought I would try throwing the 1/4" allen in with the 3/4" allen in the heel since I could do that without removing anything (other than the belt cover). The next run I ran 104 at 10,500 RPM.
We rode all over and I decided to try climbing. The sled climbs well with the 2 1/4" finger track but with all that weight on the Heavy Hitters and the hard crust under the powder I was only turning 9,600 RPM. No I didn't check the track speed. I'll have to try climbing again under better circumstances.
We headed back by the airstrip on the way back to the truck and it had cooled down a little. I thought OK, one more run. This time I was at 106 at 10,600. For comparison both my loaded up 8DN-00 weights and the Dalton 57.5 weights showed top end speed of 86 mph. This is a 20 mph top end boost WITH a 2 1/4" finger track.
Another thing I noticed was how low my RPMs were while just riding down the groomed trail. At 50 mph. I was at 7,00 RPM. With the Daltons I was over 8,000. Anytime you nail it the tach goes right to 10,500ish and the top end pull is like nothing I have felt with any of the other weights (bar stock). My mileage was 15 mpg. This is with the ECP filters, 160 mains jets and the needles RAISED one notch from stock to try to kill the burble. It is MUCH better I must add.
Nobody would race me They did say the sled sounded cool. Everybody thought it was totally stock. The White Knuckle QC-1 pipe sounds absolutely wonderful too. They all gathered around to ask me what speed I saw after my runs up and down the airstrip. When I said 102 the first time they had no interest in lining up. Go figure? I had my GPS on the sled too and the 102 run read 90 (89.9 mph) on my GPS.
There is one more little thing I must add. There was a hoped up Arctic cat EXT running around up there. He wouldn't really race me but he'd sneak up from behind me and go flying by. One time I let him get a good 200 yards in front of me. Picture this guy tucked behind his windshield trying to eak out every last MPH out of his sled. I nailed it and took off after him. Well before the end of the strip I flew by him like he was going backwards. He was never to be seen again. Oh well. Sorry for the random mutterings. PB
