Just pick up a couple new yamaha"s. Notice I don"t have a "rope" to start them with! I've started 2 cycles off the 2ndary when my recoil broke. So being new to 4 strokes what can I expect relying on the battery only. If the battery goes dead the dealer show me how to jump the sled to start. But the battery is buried down there somewhere and I haven"t disassembled the motor compartment yet to find it. What is the proper way to recharge the battery and the easiest way to do it. I saw something mention in one of the topics about a Optimate Battery Charger. How is this used in a failed battery situation. Also I would think one would have to carry some sort of a jumper cable to restart a sled. Can I jumb on sled off another using battery cables?

Well my three 4 strokes start most the time if its above 30 deg!
LOL!
I use the Battery Tender & have the jumper cables that come with it!
You can just jump from another sled or car!!!
It comes with cables you mount to your battery that extends out so you can get to them easy if needed!!
To Jump or charge!
YOU'LL HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE 4 STROKES!!!
You have to use the primary clutch if you have to rope start it, not the secondary!!!

Yes, there is battery cable extensions that end up on the right frame rail by the oil tank. The optimate wont help you out on the trail unless you have a plact to get 110v and some time.
The sleds start pretty well, but on a TY Manitoba ride (something like -40-45 deg) a couple sleds did not start and had to be jumped.
A variety of jumper cables can be used including car type but obviously they are big and bulky.
These are the ones I carry, light, well made.

Four strokes will start by using a backup pull rope the same as any other sled ,just carry a lenght of rope in your tool box take off the clutch side cover and clutch guard wrap the rope around the clutch like in the old days and give it a pull. I had to start my rx-1 like this last year when I had a cell in the battery short out.

can EFI be started by rope??
most say you would never need to jump your sled but my daughters drained my battery once allready by leaving the key on.
I was wondering the same thing about using a rope to start the sled. there is usually at least one other person that is carrying one. BUT, will the fuel injection sleds even start this way??? seems like you would have to get the clutch spinning to get juice to the injecters to then spray fuel.
Not sure but seems like it would take a few trys just to get fuel to the engine. just thinking about those mornings at camp with no power, no friends with a battery, and waking up to find out key was left on because someone was admiring my gauges the night before and left key on.

This is TRUE....remember, when you shut your sleds off using the kill switch, UNLESS THE KEY IS TURNED OFF, the sled will draw from the battery.BA APEX said:most say you would never need to jump your sled but my daughters drained my battery once allready by leaving the key on.

I thought the using kill switch worked the same as using the key?? I hope it does because I don't think i've ever used my key. does anyone know this for sure??05RX1LE said:This is TRUE....remember, when you shut your sleds off using the kill switch, UNLESS THE KEY IS TURNED OFF, the sled will draw from the battery.

Maybe I was mis-understood. You can shut the machine off by either using the KEY -or- the KILL SWITCH. Yes.
But....if you shut the machine off by using the kill switch BUT do not shut the key off, there is still current being drawn from the battery which will eventually drain your battery. So if the sled is parked in your garage for a few weeks, just make sure the key is in the "off" position so that your battery will not be damaged.
I got into the habit of simply shutting my machine off using the key...that way I would never forget.
