I put one on my 09 years ago. Was a Mountaintech, brand which I believe are discontinued. And to answer an earlier question, pretty sure there is an over temp auto shut down only while idling.
Back when I got my 2009 xtx, I installed the yamaha mountain cooler, digital temperature guage from Ulmer, and scratchers on the rails. No problems, runs 165 degrees fahrenheit 98 percent of the time and that's with a 1.75 track. Obviously they don't like idling for any length of time, or icy trails or icy lakes, but the temp guage is perfect because you know exactly how your engine is reacting to all conditions. You can just check your coolant with an antifreeze coolant tester to make sure it is not 100 percent antifreeze. My guess is your sensor and thermostat are likely fine, unless this is a high mileage sled. Big motor, big heat.
Do you know if they still make the temp gauge you had installed? Would like to get a clean install digital temp gauge for that exact reason but can't seem to see if Ulmer still makes them. Sled has 7,000 miles so not sure where the thermostat and sensor would stand with those kind of miles.Back when I got my 2009 xtx, I installed the yamaha mountain cooler, digital temperature guage from Ulmer, and scratchers on the rails. Did you test the strength of your antifreeze? Just switching this out may be all you need. Higher concentration of antifreeze hinders cooling efficiency.
I personally would opt for my dual fan kit vs a mt cooler. Dual fan is still effective when sitting still and running roads with no snow.
I thought all XTX models had the MTX cooler? Or was that only on later models? My 14 came with it and I'm pretty sure my 12 had it factory.
A lot of good advice from MrSled. Per his notes I would check all this off your list - verify the temp sensor is good, verify the fans are turning on, and flush the coolant.
I've ran my sled with a 1.75" track for almost 6 years and have only seen the temp light come on a few different times running trails/road sides with very poor snow conditions for a good stretch. The only goodies I have that may help are a Mountaintech IP vent kit (installed by previous owner - https://www.mountaintechindustries.com/#mountaintechipventwithipgagemount) and recently added WRP panel/hood vents for extra air flow.
So I'd have to have a digital temp read out to do this test then, correct?Should be able to test the temp sensor with the built in diagnostics on the sled. For example, if the sled has sat for a while, the air temp reading and the engine temp reading should be identical, or at least within a degree or two.
Looks like you can order them on Amazon. These are the same ones by the looks? This is what Ulmer used to carry. I have them on two sleds for over ten years, no problems. Check with him.View attachment 156999 View attachment 157000
I sent ulmer racing a email about the gauge just waiting to hear back.Looks like the same, but if I remember right (Allen) Ulmer provided you with the appropriate T fitting that goes into the heater line by the thermostat? for your sled, I don't know how readily those are available from other places. Still might save you some time to check with him first and see what he has available or left over. He also had exact installation instructions with pictures for each model sled.
Cant remember Logan if you said you were running a Trail Tank? I had read about cooling issues with Trail Tanks before I installed mine. The Trail Tank reduces the area behind the radiator and its efficiency for cooling. So when I installed my Trail Tank I looked at going with either the MTX cooler or BOP dual cooling fan kit. In the end I went with BOP fan kit for the reason if you are running on a hard pack or ice, there will be little to throw against the MTX heat exchanger. That and the fan kit was a lot less money and super easy install. I also added some Amsoil Dominator coolant booster for an added measure. So far I have not had any cooling issues in over 3,000 miles I put on my Nytro in the last two seasons with this setup. G.B. https://www.amsoil.com/p/dominator-coolant-boost-rdcb/I havent tested the coolant but will definitely be replacing when I install mtx exchanger .
Not running a trial tank but purchased a used mtx exchanger that I'm going to install and also change out the antifreeze. Gonna add a daytona temp sensor so I can get a better idea of actual engine temp. If I still have issues I'll go ahead and replace temp sensor and thermostat.Cant remember Logan if you said you were running a Trail Tank? No, the numbers can be pulled up through the built in machine diagnostics. No other tools needed. So I'd have to have a digital temp read out to do this test then, correct?
