Jason the reverse models lower gears start with a 8fb number. I am not aware of any 40 tooth lowers for the reverse models. Fill me in if your onto something

There is a 40 tooth lower gear. Check the parts in a Moutain reverse Kit. The moutain has a 40 tooth lower gear and the shorty track has a 38 tooth.
According to the Yamaha Parts Finder linked to this forum. The part number for
40 tooth gear, 8FB-47587-00-00 (for a reverse gear kit)
38 tooh gear, 8FB-47587-80-00 (for a reverse gear kit)

i assume you have a 2003. In 2004 the reverse gears were recalibrated and now the moutain kit for 2004 which will fit on a shorty has a 40 tooth gear. If you have a reverse kit on your machine and it has 38 or 39 teeth you can order just the 40T gear and it will fit perfectly.
I found all this out by mistake. My dealer sent me a Moutain reverse kit and I installed it on my shorty. Come to find out it had a 40 tooth gearing. Some told me to keep the 40t gear becasue I would be faster up to about 100 but would loose some top end. I called my dealer and he is sending me the 38t gear as a swap. I am kinda anal about those things. Darn it if it's suppose to be a 38t gear then I want the 38t gear. Besides my dealer has jerked me around on this whole reverse kit anyway and he is going to send me what I paid for.
