I've seen lots of posts on chassis issues ,cooling, icing...etc. But how is the 80hp 2 cylinder motor and gear reduction units holding up ?Can you compare this motor on equals to the 120hp 3 cylinder that seems to be bullet proof so far ?

You'll never beat the triple for reliability. I lost my motor at 2500 miles. I think that is rare, though.

there is the rare and weird occurances that happen. i've herd of a few guyss loose their balancing shafts and locking the engine at around 10 000 kms. just saying 10 000 kms and still running is more then enough to say engine reliability is freekishly awesome. i personally just rolled mine over to 5000kms and no engine issues at all...a few electrical problems and some minor issues with icing and cooling is nothing considering i've touched the engine once in 5000 kms and for an oil change and spark plug change.
there aren't many 2 smokers that last past 8000kms so ya.

I think the major problems are rare, and Im one of the unlucky ones, but Yamaha put a new motor in it free of charge. (3 year warranty). 1250 miles, and gear reduction gear went through crankcase.

im just shy of 4000km's on mine. I wast an auction sale and there were 6 gt's with 9500kms up to 1500kms. They all ran like new and looked almost as good.

My VL has almost 10,600 km's of never let me down reliability. Just a couple of minor reverse switch troubles.

13000 last look just put new Pickup coil in last year. No other issues other than two sets of plugs in motor. Just waiting for motor to bite big one so I am justified in real mods!
