Any of you phazer riders have much seat time a 06-07 nytro (not the new fx). I'd like to hear your opinions on the two sleds, specifically in the areas of: weight? low end? mid-range? fuel range? rear suspension bottoming resistence?
I ride a nytro and really feel the weight if I land from anywhere near ten feet high. It also can be a handful in the air. After a day of riding, I'm wiped out.
How much better would an fx phazer be at jumping, airtime? Does an fx phazer have the handling and hp to hang with a nytro on a natural terrain x-country course ie. lots of off cambers, drops, launches and no straights over 500 feet long.
Just curious on how much I'll have to give up in one area to gain in another.
Thanks for any opinions.

I havent ridden a Nytro but did ride Apex which I believe is same chassis.Of course power was no comparison.Up to 60mph they are close after that Apex is flying by.Fuel range is almost identical.Phazer feels much lighter and is a pleasure to fly.Phazer doesnt corner on flats as well as Apex.Phazer feels like it has way more engine braking which means you need to control throttle more coming into and out of corners.Apex does ride through bumps "flatter" than Phazer.Best I can explain is you are more involved on Phazer in bumps.I like that.Either can handle big holes and Jumps depending on shock settings.Nothing I have ever ridden can be manuevered in air like Phazer it is awesome!Phazer is much easier to stand up on and is more comfortable to my knees when sitting down.Apex has better wind protection but low windshield doesnt do much.If I were going to MI where trails are fast and miles long Apex would be my choice. For trails here in WI where longest run is a 40acre field and trails can be narrow and pounded I like my Phazer better.

Well said Cannondale, that pretty well sums up my own Apex vs. Phazer comparison. The 06/07 Nytro is a bit different than the Apex in that it rides in the Deltabox 1 or Vector chassis. I rode the Nytro back-to-back with the Apex models in 06 and felt that it was trying to be what the Phazer is today.
IMO, the main difference with the Phazer regarding weight and handling is balance and agility. The sled seems to be self leveling when you hit an off center bump. "Flickable" is a term that I've heard used to descibe the handling and would have to agree if there was such a word. My redneck translation would be that you don't have to work as hard to get the sled to do what you want. That being said, the Phazer feels more like a sport quad or a dirt bike than a traditional snowmobile and may require some seat time to feel comfortable with its handling.
For power, I feel you will be on par with the Nytro up to 60 mph if not even a little better in the low end if you can get the track to hook. After 60 mph, I believe the Nytro will walk away as my Phazer tops out around 80 mph 'indicated'. Worst case fuel range, holding it pinned all day on RR grades and lakes, in my experience has been around 120 miles. The range seems to be much better and the sled is much happier when I stick to the tighter, more techical trails.
Bottom line: Once you become accustomed to the sled, I believe you will not only be able to hang with a 06/07 Nytro on the natural terrain course described but possibly even do better as long as you don't have long pulls where the Nytro top end will come into play.
If nothing else, you certainly won't have to work as hard to get around the same course.

Thanks for the replies. The only time I "feel" the weight of the nytro is on landing (from 5 feet or more high) or at the end of the day when I'm spent. Sometimes the nytro lands like a boat anchor hitting bottom and it limits how far/high I want to jump it. What are the height/distance limits for an fx phazer (hard snow or 6-12inches of powder) where it gets uncomfortable on landing?

That's a suspension thing, dude. That and you need to find good jumps. If you're always flat landing like in your avatar, even the GYT shocks on the FX will not be good enough. Good jumps have good landings. It doesn't matter what you ride, you gotta learn to backside the landings to get that buttery smooth feel. The FX is a good XC machine, but no machine is going to be good at jumping "step to flat"s. If it was, the suspension wouldn't move on anything else.
Yup so many variables to answer a jumping question. If landing on a flat as long as speed is there 5ft wouldnt be a issue but if only jumping 5ft distance and 5ft down suspension may bottom on Phazer.I have Custom Axis rear shocks on order to take care of that though. Now if you hit that same 5ft jump at 60 or 70mph you will have a very plush landing even on a flat but you will go alot more than 5 ft distance. The forward momentum allows your suspension to compress gradually rather than all at once.
Feel at end of day is where the Phazer really shines.I personally cant see any sled competing in that area.I have had knee done and my knees legs and even right in back of upper arms have no cramps or bangs at end of day.Easy stand up position and the fact you not holding your body up with your arms are what make that possible along with "Flickability".There is possibly an advantage for Nytro in wind and cold protection but all you need is to dress for it.

Downhill landing zones aren't an option so often when you ride entirely natural terrain and drifts. Even landing the skid first doesn't help much. I'm 170lbs and bottom the rear even with the compression adj. shock 2 clicks from full hard. Even when I don't bottom, with the nytro I get the feeling of that extra mass on landing like catching a medicine ball in gym class.
When you see a sno-x sled soar 100 feet and land without the rider's head even dipping, it can't just be shock settings. It has to be less mass.
Thanks cannondale 27 for the insights on the phazer. Just missed a test ride on an FX phazer at my dealer this morning. If the phazer had another 20hp and could consistently hit 90mph, I think it would be a perfect sled. A basketball versus a medicine ball.

Looks like a new NytroFX would fit you real well.

A couple of seasons will give yamaha time to perfect the new fx nytro and me the time to: A. put some miles on the nytro, B. find the cash or C. FX racer?
Still, I had as much fun on a "lite" fan-cooled sled as I ever do on my nytro and the phazer sure has its appeal.
