The head shim is quite obvious. IIRC it is around 0.070"(don't quote me), whereas the stock is quite thin. Peek in there with a flashlight and have a look.
Where are you located? Altitude? Stock MCX boost on pump gas at sea level without a shim would be bad and (hopefully) unlikely.
I would like two think that if po strayed from mcx's instructions, that they would have understood the importance of gauges.
