Let me start by saying that sleds are reatively new to me. I owned a '78 Yamaha Exciter 440 back in high school in the mid 80's for a few years, and never really did any work on it. This past winter I had 2 ACs stored at my house and put about 500 miles on a ZR900 and became hooked on sleds again. I just purchased a '03 RX-1 ER LE with 2184 miles on it. Now I'm looking for some performance mods that'll give some added performance without breaking the bank. I'm not interested in turbos or superchargers. I was thinking maybe a clutch kit, intake increase, and maybe exhaust change.
My biggest problem is I don't feel confident enough to do this work myself or have a lot of time with work and other commitments, and would rather pay a pro to do it correctly the first time. With that in mind, should I even have mods done? If so, then what would you recommend that I can have done that doesn't need constant tweaking and adjusting. I'd simply like to have something done, gas and go, feel a little boost in performance, and not have to worry about it.
I started this thread in the mod section about a maxxperf.com kit.

Theres a few reasons why I chose this kit. 1) They are an hour from my home and will do the work for me and cost seems pretty reasonable. 2) The exhaust review by MrSled was pretty positive. 3) The kit will not require much tweaking.
Here are some questions based on feedback from that thread I started: 1) Does exhaust increase hp or does it simply increase noise/change sound and reduce a few lbs? If not, I won't bother. 2) Do the tpi valves help intake air flow producing more hp, or is there a much better solution that does NOT need a lot of tweaking? I've read some about the ECP and EVAC, but not sure if it needs to be tweaked often to ensure proper performance. 3) Clutching, what should I be looking for? What do I want?
Info about me: I weigh about 175 lbs with full gear. I'll be riding mostly groomed trails, but also twisties through woods.
The speedshop intake and clutch kit looks good, but then I'm worried about where I can get it done around here.
Appreciate any and all advice.

Leave the exhaust and airbox alone. Both those mods are expensive and give minimal overall performance increases in my opinion. Go with a good clutch setup, I recommend Hauck and a roller secondary, get the front end updates done (springs, links, bar), ride it like you stole it! If you do a lot of tight woods twisties, you might want a taller seat and taller bars. Some like it, some don't.

red2003,
Thanks for your input. I will be doing the springs, links, and sway bar. I know I want the 2.3 straight rate springs, but not sure on the bar. Do I want the 12 or 13mm bar?

Go with the 13 mm. If your gonna ride the fast, tight stuff, you'll want it. Also, I forgot to mention skis. Either go with a good long carbide on the stockers and fix the darting with spacers under the rear rubber block, or better yet, drop $350.00 for a set of Simmons and never experience a ski related handling issue again! The stockers really suck in powder and with the stiffer front end it makes it tough to roll the sled up in the loose stuff.

Contact matt at tha speed shop or Jeff at cpr, I would not ride a rx without a matched clutch kit and air filter kitThere is not much difference on top end but huge in the mid range. Exhaust is personal preference on noise.

I reccomend the ECP kit.

Sd5500,
Not sure what your running for a track, but I would start with good traction before getting into the clutches or performance mods. I’ll second Red2003 on the exhaust mods.
Lots can be done in the clutching, but sometimes can be a compromise to gain in one area and lose in another. I’ve had great experience with a roller secondary and works great for smooth shifting through the tight and twisty trails.
The roller rooster clutch kit I use is in this link below...no machining, bolt in and go!

The dual carbide runners (8") also work great to reduce darting on the trails. Worth a try before spending more money on new skis....

Guys I totally agree with the traction mods. Can't believe I forgot it. . But I really can't see the ECP kit. Not much on top end and mid range in a snowmobile doesn't change much. When you need acceleration and punch it you are at max RPM nearly instantly. The midrange boost cannot be harnessed with a snowmobile clutch. If your gonna drag it, thats one thing because your starting at idle, but out on the trail you'll never use the midrange power boost. Just my opinion.

Red,
I noticed a huge diff. between my friends '03 RX-1 shorty (non-ripsaw) with ECP's and HH's and my BONE STOCK '04 RX-1, 136" w/ripsaw. We switched sleds numerous times and even on the loose stuff, that setup rocks! He can even pull stock Warriors too.

In a drag race, I'm sure the filters make a difference as the clutches are coming up to the shift point, but after that there IS no midrange as your at full RPM till you lift. I don't question in a drag race that they are quicker, just whether or not the money is justified out on the trail . Also for the small increase in usable HP, your sacrificing fuel economy as you'll need to jet up quite a bit. JMO.

Hard as it is to fathom, and we had this same discussion here prior to my installing the ECP kit, my mileage actually IMPROVED over stock by just about 1.5 mpg. on the average
Flies in the face of all logic but I checked it numerous times prior to installation and after. On one ride with my son-in-law (who is 70 lbs lighter than me and has a bone stock 03 LE shorty) on firm snow conditions, he got 16 mpg for the 175 mi. and I got 18.2. Go figure.
Ever since I installed the filter kit that 18.2 was my best mileage for a longish run while 14.1 was the low.............but that was breaking trail through 8 - 10" of fresh snow for the entire ride
