This isn't a huge worry as the machine is under warranty, but I sure would like to know what the 'collected wisdom' thinks the problem might be with my reverse.
On Sunday I tried to reverse the sled and it seemed to go into position fine, backup beeper doing it's thing, but when I gave it some power it made a howling, grinding noise and it didn't move. Put in forward and moved ahead a bit fine, then tried reverse again, it worked for a bit then seemed to pop out of gear and grind/howl again. Frustrating.
I'm getting the dealer to come over and pick it up, but I'd sure like some input from the group as to what the hell it could be so I can at least talk with some authority.
Machine had about 1300KMS / 800 miles on the clock.

Don't worry
Had the same exact thing happening on my '09 Apex LTX GT. Called the dealer in Eagle River WI, they knew right away what it was. As it was explained to me, there's a rod that attachs to the reverse lever that needs to be tightened up/adjusted. 45 minutes labor and the problem was fixed, plus Yamaha covered it under warranty.
I know the sound shocks the heck out of you, like something is really wrong. I've been good now for a month with it - no additional problems.

X3 but it only takes 5 minutes. They should fix this in your driveway.

Same thing on my apex this year. One of the linkage bolts was loose which gave enough play when you shifted it so that it did not fully go into gear. REAL simple to see if you can check quickly before paying someone to do it.

Everyone.
Thanks for the collective heads up. Diagnosis was correct, and the patient is back to full health. Indeed it was done in a few minutes and no harm done. PHEW. It was wonderful knowing ahead what to expect.
What an amazing resource this is for everyone.
