Problem with Apex

I changed oil yesterday on my 07 Apex. Everything went good until I went to bolt the headlight bracket on with the 4 bolts that go into rivnuts. One rivnut stripped out. How hard of a job is it to replace the rivnut in the aluminum frame???

Anyone else have this problem. The sled only has 500 miles on it!

Ouch, dude.

I'm not sure on that one. Have you called your dealer and asked for the replacement part?

This is me, and what I would do. Might not be the best advice, but hey, it's already stripped, so you have nothing to loose but not riding.

I would take a bolt the nest size up, most likely UNC and re-thread that rivnut with the bolt. Again, that is me. I would rather do that and be able to ride than wait on something so small.
 
The old riv-nut can be drilled out. I do not think Yamaha lists that as a replacable part. I could be wrong on that so check :). If not try NAPA they do stock riv-nuts. Atleast around here in N. Il.
If not you may have to buy a quantity of them. Here is a lik that may help

Take your time drilling and you will not have a problem. You just do not want to make the whole any larger.

Or a call to the dealer and mabey they can do some warranty for you. Never hurts to ask.

If you do decide to change that rivnut, if I remember right, it is a 6mm bolt with a 10mm head. Before I took mine off, I tested them and found they were torqued to about 165 inch pounds.
Start with a 5/16 inch drill bit and work your way up until you get the rivnut drilled out. As sobfrogg says, don't make the hole any bigger than it is. I would think the rivnut is aluminum, but check to make sure. As mentioned, some NAPAs and also auto body supply stores have rivnuts, but if you find you have a 10mm hole, possibly the better rivnut available is AVK Industrial, A-L Series, it has the knurled outer edges. I believe MSC has them, or you can order from McMaster-Carr. Check the thickness of the frame and if it is between .7 and 4.2 mm, then the rivnut you are looking for has a body length of 14.73(not including the head) and from McMaster-Carr is part number 94020A383. This is a pack of 25 for 11.67 plus about 4.00 shipping. If the rivnut is steel, just look up same rivnut but part no. for steel. To install rivnuts, you can buy a tool for minimum 80. but you have to have the right tip for your specific rivnut, you might be able to rent a tool from auto body supply store or borrow from a body shop. Or... you can do a search for "skid plate rivnut install"(can also find it in the FAQ section thanks to Tork). This may give you an idea how to install it. Hope this helps if the dealer can't.
 
07GT, just curious, how did you strip the Rivnut, start the bolt crooked, or torque it too much?
 
I suspected that, that's why I mentioned for future reference that the factory torque seems to be around 165 inch lbs.. When I put the aluminum replacement rivnut into a 2mm thick sheet of aluminum(which is probably close to the frame thickness), I was only able to safely torque that rivnut to about 120 inch lbs.. Probably tight enough to hold that bracket in place, but I'm wondering why it's not as tough as the original. It's not spinning, but at 140 inch lbs. it feels like the threads are stressing. Just keep it in mind, if you go this route.
