Problems Adjusting the Track

Stupid question, but ive never noticed this before. So my buddy calls me over cuz for some reason he took the the whole rear rear assembly off to change his hyfaxes and couldnt get them back on. (he couldnt wait for 2 days for me to do it for him). So we get the wheels back on and adjust the track. Between the rear wheel and the end of the track we has 3/4" on both sides. But then I look at the track in the middle of the rail and notice the at the track was more to the right of the snowmobile by almost 1/2". WTF. Give me a hand I'm stumped.

Not fully understanding what you're saying, but did he remove the whole suspension? Or just the rear wheel and axle assembly?

Have you tried spinning the track (manually or under power) with it on a track stand? Was there any binding?

The way I read it is that track tension on one side was set tighter than the other. Try setting it again.

Perhaps look at the microfiche for the sled and see if all parts are in correct order.

If I understand you correctly the track is centered at the rear axle but not up near the middle of the rails? Are you looking at the rear wheels or the rear of the rails to determine alignment at the rear?

Perhaps the rails are bent? Is the misalignment the same on both sides of the rails? Is it the same at the front of the rails?

He removed just the rear wheel and axle assembly. I checked and double checked, even took the assembly off and put it back on to make sure it was on correctly (using a diagram). the track was off the ground the whole time. We would turn the adjustments, then start the sled and spin the track, then adjust some more. When the measurements were equal at the wheels I did notice that I could turn one wheel by hand and the other i could not.

Now im wondering if he shifted the track on the drive shaft off just a bit and its out of alignment up front.

Instead of looking at the distance from the outsides of the rear wheels to the track edges look instead at the rear of the rails to see if they are centered over the track windows.

Once the rear of the rails are centered in the track windows look forward on the rails to see if they continue to be aligned over the track windows all the way to the fronts of the rails.

This should help you to determine if something is bent. You should spin the track under power on a track stand and let it coast to a stop between adjustments and checks.

I did check the rails in the windows and they were equal. I need to check again to see if maybe the rails are bent.

Make sure that you tighten the rear axle nut and spin the track under power before taking your measurements.

Take some pics of the suspension and post them.

You might want to take the suspension out of the sled and look at it closer. Maybe the rails are bent, or something is snapped/missing, like an upper idler wheel.

Was there any problems that he had last year? Any adjustments that he recently did and hasn't told you?

are the ajusting nut's faceing outward like they should?

I do not think that you could get the rear axle through the adjusters if they were angled inwards. However it might still be worth checking just in case.
