Here's the latest project idea, getting my 2009 Nytro FX to corner REALLY well while keeping the great bump performance. IMO, once set up, it does an admirable job in corners given the weight of that beautiful chunk of aluminum and steel under the hood. The formula so far includes the typical items, wider and lower.

The wider part for an 09 is easy. Modified 08 arms with 09 spindles brings the sled out from 41.3 to a 43" ski stance. An aftermarket kit could also be used to obtain the 43". Alternatively one could go even wider with custom arms.

That brings us to going lower. The major problem with going too low is that we start eating into the precious bump absorbing up travel. In order to deal with that, I'm going to install one of my favorite items - Ohlins PDS (Progressive Dampening System). Secondary suspension is awesome stuff that works well. The front shocks won't be too difficult. The rear skid shocks though, they only have so much room to add in the secondary piston and cup. With some careful caluculations and a slight loss of droop travel, a 35mm center shock PDS cup and 40mm rear shock PDS cup can be fit to the standard Ohlins YA868 and YA869 shocks.

I'll post some pictures of the parts asap. Comments welcome.

You seem to be working on some cool stuff. How is the steering dampener working? I look forward to seeing some pics and testing results on your projects.

Fun stuff, seems to be little interest around here in high end out of the box stuff, though. No biggy....

Plans are to install the damper after all of this suspension work is completed. I need to be able to feel exactly what the sled is doing before dampening out anything in the steering.

You want it to corner? Put a 1" track on this thing, it changes big time on how these things corner. Three of us in my riding group did this and couldn't beleave the difference it made in the corners. Night and day

What 1" track did you use. I was thinking yesterday while riding icy trails how much better this thing handles with more slide in the rear. I was having a blast till I got into some heavier wet snow, then I was fighting it again in the twisties.

Funny you should offer up that recomendation! I'm just now considering installing the 1" Predator Track that was on my Rage. The thing is it's a 136".... which I love, but the length will detract a bit from cornering. Maybe I'll try a 1" in 121" length..... Hmmmm

Just finished the front shocks. They feature high and low compression adjustment, rebound, triple rate springs, and PDS.

A suggestion I have is to relocate the swaybar mount to the forward hole on the lower A arms. It reduces body roll and inside ski lift making it feel a lot more stable in the turns.

Cool!Never knew you could get PDS for the smaller bodied Ohlins. Here is a pic of one from a Cannondale and a old ATK dirtbike so people know what you are talking about. The extra piston comes into play in very end of travel when it goes into a cup in shock body.Old ATK one used a needle which went into shock shaft doing similar thing. Also Walker Evans uses a needle but valving of main stack is being bypassed all the time till very bottom. No bumpstops on these even.

I'm starting with a 22 - 33.5nmm (125/190lb) main and a 49nmm (280lb) tender... we'll see how it goes. The crossover sleeve for the tender spring is adjustable on the machine, so if there is a little too much roll I can take it out of action sooner in the travel. The front end dropped about 1.25 - 1.5".

Yup, the 36mm shock has a cute little 20mm PDS cup and piston. Thanks for adding the pics and info. BTW, I just built a set of these for a customer's Phazer.... but you'll have to wait for his post to hear about them.

Would it not be easier to control that with a shock spring..and leave the dampening to the guts...

interesting, I can't wait to see your skid set up and your ride reports. I think it will work well for ya, kinda like modding a REV into and XP.

I installed Ohlins YA862 on my 08RTX, they came under spring and over damped IMO. They came with 19n/mm. I had them revalved and running 140 lbs now. If you happen to have some 130 lb front springs kicking around that will fit my shocks please PM me. I have found cross over tunning to be a PIA or seat.......better luck finding the right spring rate and tune the damping. !!

Seems to be a common issue with the YA862... They definetly set the dampening for aggressiveness. The YA8681 and 8691 rear SE spec shocks are very aggressive, they work well when pushed. I do not have anything on the shelf, but if Ohlins has it, I can get for you. Hmmm, I've had decent luck tuning crossovers on ATVs... guess we'll see how the sleds go....
