Hi

Just wanted to shared my experience.

Someone in our group lost his starter, totally stuck.

I gaved a try to the pull start technique, that work awesome.

We only had a big rope for pulling 5/8''Ø.
3 solid and tight revolution over the primary, pulled from front of the sled and sled fired right away.
I stopped the motor and did that 2 times, to be sure we could continue our ride.

Now safety :

1- Dont wrap the cord over you hand completly, one time rope catched a rib of the primary and stayed attached
2- Since #1 can happen, have someone ready to hit STOP Button
3- Be sure to clear the clutch area quick since #1 can happen and have no one near.
4- pull straight without any slack in the cord, its still a hard pull and like i experienced, outside in the cold with frozen hand, it can be painfull ;)!
5- have a rope for that purpose.
6-Practice it in the garage

good to know.

Ive started them this way as well.
To be a little softer on your hand when pulling i usually tie the rope to a small twig/branch about 4 inches long.
Its a little easier to hold the rope this way and keeps away the temptation of wrapping the rope around your hand

I have found a flat nylon strap works better. Something such as a small ratchet strap, which also has many other uses on the trail. It can be wound/wrapped cleanly over itself 2 or 3 times. This gives a better pull with no slip and much less of a chance of tangling. ;)!

I tried doing this last year when my starter seized and failed. I had taken the strap and handle from my Z570 and wound the primary but I was trying to start from behind the sled. May have been my problem. I couldn't even get a pop.

I agree on the flat strap with a handle. Best combo IMHO.

Worked on my Warrior when I owned one. Tried it just to see If I could.

I kept the strap and handle that came with my 1979 El Tigre Cat for clutch starting and it lives with my jumper cables in the trunk.

IMHO Yammie 4 Strokes should come with them from the Factory in the tool kit.

i got an old seat belt out of a 80's chev truck just for that ..and a piece of wood ..hope i never have to use it

flat strap is a good idea, round one have a tendency to slip sideway on the clutch.

Never tried it on a 4-stroke but had to start an old Yamaha with a murdered recoil WAY in the bush and the only thing I had was my good old trusty Levy leather belt. Worked fine.

My buddy Tim used to show off and start his TX 340 BY HAND off the primary I mean.
