I have been going back and forth between the Cross Over and Back Country. Decided on the Back Country.

Mostly ride in the UP, plan to go out west this year.

What all do I need to change?
- Gear
- Extroverts
- Any wheels

THANKS

I would install a 20 tooth top sprocket since its cheap and you can use the same chain. Make it a bit easier to spin tht track. Extra wheels if you ride alot of hardpack. I dont believe in extroverts on the xtx. My track has to be very loose to even ratchet a tad. If its anywhere in spec it shouldnt ratchet like the other models do

I'd put extroverts on as long as you have it all apart, and get the 4th wheel kit for the rear axle.
I too want to go with a bigger track but just put new Ice Age rails on and went with two inside wheel set up was this a mistake. I thought I had smoeone tell me it will be better in the deep stuff like that it lets the track flex making it easier to roll on its side.

Didn't know the xtx tracks didn't ratchet like the shortys, I'd probably still throw them on if it was me. I hate hearing that ratchet sound and then having to tighten the track on the trail while my buddies level all the powder in the swamp we just found.

Two inside wheels... don't know anything about that, sounds more like a mountain thing to me. Makes sense that it might roll on its side easier tho.

I have the Back Country on my XTX as well - in fact it came set-up from the dealer as a Spring order as such. They of course had to remove the tunnel and heat exchanger protectors in order to provide the required clearance.

Gearing is stock, drivers are stock, idler wheel set-up is stock. . . .had added a "marginal snow" wheel kit to the top of the curve on the front of the rails (no scratchers) as well as changed my primary weights to a heel empty, mid empty with a 3.5g steel rivet in the toe.

Nothing else changed in either the primary or seconday - running an OEM 8DN belt.

Also running a pair of the Curve XS skis. . . .I go up to the UP of MI 4-6 times a season and out to Togwotee Pass for a week at the end of March.

Works excellent both places with the same set-up - although out West it get's to be a pooch around 9,700ft but what can one expect for a naturally asperated 130+hp machine with a dry weight over 500lbs and a 270lb rider. . . . .more of this I guess :exc: and less of this :drink:

Someday perhaps they'll be an "altitude compensator" installed for my enjoyment. . . .till' then I'll just keep on keepin on ;)!

I run the 1.75" Ripsaw Lite on my XTX which is similar to the Backcountry. I also put on extros because I like the peace of mind knowing that it'll NEVER ratchet. I didn't change anything else in the driveline. It hooks up and pulls like a freight train, but it's hard on belts. I blew the original belt last year with about 1800mi on it. In retrospect, it might be easier on the belt if I geared down a bit, but I do like the top end I still have without a gearing change. The clutching it also stock and seems adequate to me. Clutching is still a bit of a mystery to me though, and I've been riding for quite a while :dunno: so I'm no help there. I also switched to two inboard mounted 8" wheels in back. I don't think it helps much rolling it on it's side in the deep stuff, but it looks pretty cool. As for trail riding- I don't notice any major handling changes, but the outer edges of the track seem to rub the tunnel more now than before- but no major damage from that.

Gearing down would def help your belt issue, 1 tooth down on the top sprocket would only affect your top end by 4-5 mph according toa gearing calculator but your clutches may shift further with the lower gears so the loss may be less than that. The stock clutching is sucky for offtrail use, not enough backshift which causes major heat in a short time which leads to belt failure.
