Should I buy a motor bike or quad bike for children? I have children aged 11 and 12 that I wish to buy either a motor or quad bike for. I know nothing about either. Which is safer and where do I go to get a good deal? I live around Geelong, Victoria. What safety gear do I need and where do I buy it. What would the cost of the bike and gear be?

saftey equipment is the same for both. they should have a chest protector, helmet, goggles, pants and gloves. boots can come later as can shin and elbow gaurds. all of this can be purchased at your local motorcycle shop and you might find some stuff used on kijiji or other similar sites.
as to the power unit, i would go with whatever they are comfortable on or you like riding as well. that way you can go for rides with them later. you can go with chinese but make shure you do your research 1st as some have known problems with parts supply and running problems.
japanese and chinese are good if you can stay on top of the maintenece.
most of the bikes can be priced on-line as can the gear. for sizing you will need to get them to try it on and make shure you allow room for them to grow safely.
here is a pretty good site for canadian pricing on gear www.royaldistributing.com. if in the us i would reccomend port yamaha (site sponsor).
last recomendation is to get them into a training course (if there is one in your area) and make shure they respect other people/ property otherwise your neighbours might get upset and call the police on them as not too many people appreciate bikes running at all hours of the day.
