I'm surprised Yamaha hasn't put out a sled with an R6 engine? I wonder how or if an R6 engine would do the new Phazers? You guys think that would be interesting or possible? I was just wondering since the new engines rev to like 17000 RPM and put like 125 hp. I would think that would be feasible in a sled?

Back when the RX-1 first came out Yamaha was asked by some of the magazines why they didnt go with an R6 engine.
They claimed that the 600 wasnt any lighter than the 1000, that the clutches couldnt withstand the kind of rpm that the 600 likes to spin at and that it didnt make the kind of lowend torque they were looking for.

Bike needs a wider power band - so one can shift - 2 stroke or 4 stroke

Sled does not need a wide powerband - CVT.

Same old question goes back to 2 stroke from bikes. A basic engine shifting - drops over 1000 rpm on the fast shift alone. So you, at least need almost a 3000 rpm powerband.

Stick a bike engine in a sled and it would go slower.

Yamaha has accomplished everything that the R6 engine would have tried to do, with their 999cc three cylinder.

As has already been stated, the R6 has terrible low-end grunt and high RPM requirements for real top-end power, so the snowmobile applications for that powerplant goes out the window.

I think it would be very cool to have a 600 4stroke with the same power as a 2stroke, and would'nt a bigger gear reduction take care of the low end grunt?
i'm not an expert but hasn't rx-1 apex engine bad low end compared to big block 2-strokes that spins at lower rpms?
