RAGE/VECTOR REVERSE ISSUES

I love my Rage but have two issues with the reverse that I don't like.

1) It seems hard to find reverse. I have to inch my sled forward 2-3 times before I am able to get the lever to slide into reverse.

2) When trying to back the thing up in any kind of snow (ie... 3 point turn on narrow trail) as soon as my flap hits the snow my suspension collapses and my sled backs over the flap. I have to get off my sled every time I want to do this kind of backing.

Anybody else seen this??
 
My warrior does the same stuff..

Get a snowflap for a standard rx-1 ITS SHORTER! than you wont back over it..
 
I always put a nylon web type strap from my bumper to the snowflap to keep it from being sucked under. It will "resist" being sucked under, but if your backing up in 12" fresh, there's no guarantees with this fix.
 
If you reverse lever linkage is loose, it can make it more difficult to get into gear.

With the linkage adjusted correctly, you will still experience what you describe, but I find the severity reduced.
 
More miles on your sled will make it go into reverse easier. Here is some thing that really made a huge difference when shifting into reverse. When I changed my chain case fluid I used Royal Purple 75-90w. This past weekend I only had to move the sled forawrd once to get it, to shift into reverse and it shifted way easier. I cannot say it will do the same for you, but it shure did make a difference in my sled. This lube is 100% synthectic.
 
Didn't have quite the same problem but I did crack my Reverse handle off! The shop has ordered me another one and glued my old one back on. I do have trouble getting it into reverse sometimes have to creep forward an inch to be able to mesh the gears.

These RX/RS sleds have closer tolerance on the reverse gear. Yamaha never had reverse on high horsepower machines, SRX, Vmax4 etc... Yamaha had a larger tolerance in the past to ease shifting into reverse. Now they have these 4 strokes with big torque & need to close the gap (less play & slop) on the reverse gear to ensure longevity. Yamaha now uses a Borg & Warner Chain in the chaincase, similar in design to what Ford & Chevy use in their Transfer cases on 4x4 trucks (tough designed chain).

I broke 3 Reverse chaincases on my wifes Vmax before giving up on having reverse. When Yamaha came out with the RX1, I knew they had to redesign the reverse kit in order to handle all the additional power. They did, but now the gears have to be lined up much closer to get them to shift.

The reverse handle is not my favorite, I grease mine often to keep it working. Otherwise it freezes up & is a bear to move.

Ditto on your two problems. I am really getting tired of backing over my snow flap. Not much left of it and the bracket is getting pretty bent up. I had a short (12.5") accessory flap on order but it never arrived. I'll have to try ordering again, or maybe just order the Veture flap. Someone else on this forum suggested this, and he's right...the Venture flap looks like it would work great and is much shorter.

While reverse is not hard to find on mine, the handle mechanism freezes frequently preventing the reverse function altogether. Some different grease on the sliding sleave should help, but I got caught a few times this weekend with no reverse feature.

Good news is I got 600 miles of extremely hard riding in last weekend, and this 46 year old is none the worse for wear. Even with the skid set on hard, it was an excellent ride, and the thing launches great off the tops of hills with just a little throttle. All in all, my favorite sled so far.
 
I used a chalk line and a dremel tool with the cutting disk on it, and cut off 2 or so inches from my stock snow flap. I then rounded the corners to give it a nice "stock" look. I'm hoping this will give me just enough room so that my studs won't grab it when I back up in snow.

I also found when I need to inch forward to get the reverse to engage, it seems to help if I grab the brake real quick to stop going forward. Slips right into reverse after that.
