rat weight settings and results

Update!! I ran the machine today and now getting 8800 to 8900 rpm things are goin good still Running two gram balls and 130 - 310 spring I am goin to shave another two grams off and test this weekend more updates to come.

more testing this weekend, mind you not much i was a bit of a wuss, woke up to -42 :o|. Kinda rude but you know just gives you a reason to go to the shop and work on the small things. I shaved the weights down to 61.5 w/ 2g ball in each, primary is still an epi purple spring @ 10 degrees , 14.5 rollers and a skidoo primary 130-310,
I have shaved most of the weight off the tip and have been tryng not to take too much off the heel, the engaugement is right were I like it around 4300-4500, That has been one thing that has not really changed through all the set ups i have done!
With out the ball and half tank of gas in -40 weather she is pulling off the line 9400 rpm and dropping down to 8890 in 500' on hard pack, In the softer snow it still spikes at 9400 but will bump up to 9000+- ,
Next step i think will to take .5 gram off the tip and maybe 1g off the heel to get a few hundred more rpm and allow me to use some different ball set ups, If the weights end up too light at least i can just toss in a 3g ball.... However this morning it is still -36 with a killer wind, testing will have to wait till later in the week
coffee bailys for all :drink:

Yukon. - What was the orginal weight of your RATS? Mine came at 67.1g; did you shave off 6 grams to start?

Ideally I would love to see the Yamaha Rat weights at 60g to start. That would really make a nice adjustable weight.

mine started at 66.9g and i tested like crazy to make them work at that weight but i was not even close!!! A 58 or 60g weight would be bang on, you could use the 3 or 3.5g ball for lower elevations and a 1-2g ball up higher.... But since i love to tinker i am glad they came at 66.9g

What about drilling some holes in the tips of the weights instead of grinding?

Hey Yukon, what kind of process is it to shave down a weight? What equipment do you use?

I have shaved mine down to 60 grams now ! The tools huh well :drink: I use a file a weight scale and a bench vice haha i know not very high tech but it works and it is working great ! First ride this year at the summit and she was pulling 8600 al day long uphill down hill It didn't seem to matter I had the weight at 61 grams and a two gram ball in it! So wheni came home I shaved another gram out and took the ball out and will test again this week I hope to over rev without a ball in it then ad weight with the balls it'll it is epic

I'm gonna hold off on grinding mine at this time, as I'd like to give the new spring from Bender (if it comes to fruition) a try.

What's your thoughts on drilling holes in the weight near the tip to bring the mass down? Should work wouldn't it?

Can you post a pic of the ground down weights?

I dont think that you would loose much weight on the tip by drilling holes, when you open them up you see that there are two slots for down pins there allready, you can file lots of weight off the tips and some off the base.... I will try to get some picts for you guys as soon as i get a stock set to show you how much i have filed off

Called Bender Racing regarding their new spring...turns out they now want you to buy a different helix to make the Rat weights work. :o| The new primary spring is just 71-322 lbs, so I don't see it will bring up top rpms.

It seems like grinding the weights is the better, and cheaper alternative.

Yukon, do you have those pics of your ground down weights?

I have some Picts of the shaved down weights but I still don't have the new ones to compare to. Yes I shave them down by hand.... I don't think there is any place to drill holes, I got he weights down to 57 Grams today, I shaved half the head off the screws that hold he two Parts of the weight together.... I have had good results with a 39 degree helix if those new weights show up tommorw I will post Picts of the new and mine...... I wanna find a rat weight that is 55 grams then adjust with the ball
