Does anybody else find this very difficult to get a complete seal. I had to push with all my might to get the rubber grommets of the air box down arround the bottom of the Carb intakes.

Does anybody have an easier way to make sure the carb and boots from the air box are fitted correctly?

Cheers,
Chris

Make sure you have the clamps loosened all the way and apply a little spit on the inside of the boots and it'll slide right on ;)!

Hey there...feel your pain!

Unscrew the clamps on the airbox almost all the way. Spray some WD-40 on you finger and rub the inside of each of the 4 rubber seals.

Should slide on nicely. You don't even have to put the WD-40 on but if it's still tough try it out. The key is to unscrew the clamps as far as you can.

Good Luck

Take the air box top off and feel with your fingers to help make sure the flanges are all the way around the carb bells.

it's much easier with the top off. You can feel/see if anything is getting pinched. It shouldn't have to be 'forced' on.

air box mod?

speaking of air boxes..i read about the holtzmans springs and i saw whewre it sadi the yellow springd were for 0-4000 with a modified air box...what can be done to the air box to modifiy it? can it be done by anyone or it this something that needs parts?

I'll third this.....plus, if you don't do it this way, I don't see how you can be sure whether it's properly installed or not.

To lubricate something that you don't want permanently lubricated, try using a little dish soap. When its first applied, its very slippery. But once it dries, its almost like a sticky glue. I use it to mount tires and put grips on bars.

Hi Chris! You might be having the same problem I'm having with my 2005 RX1. If you check the underneath of the airbox facing the front of the machine there suppose to snap and hold the airbox there should be two tabs that lock onto the frame. If these tabs are worn or broken they won't be able to push the carb boots onto the carbs and will leave a gap at the bottom of the carbs. I'm doing some mods out to find this solution to the problem. I even tried looking for a new airbox but Yamaha does not make them anymore! Problems with having twenty year old machines! And of course if you find a used one I'm sure it will suffer with the same issues! Let me know what you find on yours!
